Went fishing with my dad today. He likes to use live smelt, so we got some and headed to our spot. I also caught a few macks. I used the live smelt on my smaller outfit that had 40 lb braid a 2 ounce sliding sinker 25 lb mono leader and 1/0 circle hook. Definitely a little bit heavy for live smelt, but it’s what I had already setup from last time.

Now there are two types of heartbreaks when it comes to halibut. The first one is that a legal breaks off right at the shore/boat. The second is that the halibut is 1/2 to 1 inch short. Well, I caught a hali that was 21.5 inches. I was so bummed :(. Next thing I caught was a 45 inch shovelnose on mackerel. I also caught some small butterfly rays on the live smelt. In the early afternoon I caught a 17 inch sand bass on a mackerel head. Was using 50lb braid, 3 ounce sliding sinker, 80 lb mono, and a 5/0 circle hook.

The day just got crazier. I was assisting my dad unhook a thornback ray when a jet skier comes flying (had to be going at least 30 mph) right along the shore from the west. Btw I was fishing the 3 amigos piers (lol). He gets right in the braid and my drag starts screaming, and the rod goes over the railing and in the water. I use the penn slammer 6500 which, if you have the reel, know that the drag does not get very loose. That rod and reel combo is worth $350, so the adrenaline starts flowing and I’m goin in! I took my phone and wallet out of my pocket, put it on my chair, and I scurry down the rocks. My rod was already submerged at this point, but thank god I was using braid because it was still barely floating. I go in the water, only about 10 yards out, and grab the braid and saved my rod! My dad told me a little later that the guy actually slowed down and untangled his body from the braid and took off. If he didn’t slow down, my rod would’ve been gone. Just another instance of a dumb *** on a jet ski who is f**cking clueless and thinks he’s cool. Thank god the slammer is sealed so no worries about water damage.

Before we left at 6PM, I had a very large critter scream drag off my penn slammer. Right when I hooked it, I started walking down to the right so I could get the fish away from the dreaded snags off of 3 amigos. But it still ended up finding the snags :(. The fish broke off and I was pissed. On the bright side, I got a sand bass dinner tonight.

Not sure what dock that is. But yeah definitely my PB sandy. Kinda surprised he ate a mack head, but then again they are opportunistic. I hear about people catching nice bass, croaker, and vinas off the docks at America’s Cup Harbor.

Don’t forgot a hali heartbreak or any fish heartbreak can include a seal or shark eating it!
