    Heya,

I would appreciate some help from this community! My boyfriend's bday is in December--he loves fishing trout and, from what I understand, trout season starts in November? So, I want to find an awesome place where we can go camping and trout fishing. We're in Mira Mesa, but I'm willing to drive up to probably 8 hours at the most? I'd prefer somewhere more quiet and/or secluded, not too busy, but I'm open to hearing any and all suggestions!

    Thank you in advance!!

Edit: everyone was so helpful and nice, thank you! I'm literally just compiling all this so I have more information and spots to choose from on our next trips too, hahaha. Thanks bunches!!!

    Veronica

Ok.. would you be willing to surprise him early and drive a few hours? If so, I might be able to help you.. only thing I can think of in December would be a ways away, and no sure thing by any means....

Ok, so.. the extended season in Inyo county extends much later (and starts earlier)than the rest of the Sierra trout season, though not into December.. Nov 15 is the last day to fish most of the waters of Mono and Inyo counties. This is an area I fish often. Is your guy into fly fishing? Does he prefer bait or jigs for trout? The streams of south Inyo county have loads of naturalized trout too, so he doesn't have to rely on stocks completely. Bigger rainbows might be a statistical improbability, but loads of semi native brown trout and smaller brookies at elevation will Co operate nicely of size isn't a huge concern...

I just googled it, Inyo is definitely a possibility distance wise! He usually uses jigs and no, he does not fly fish.

I mean, big is always nice! But, as long as we're relaxing and catching fish together it doesn't matter too much! I'm looking into it and it looks like it has great potential.

Apologies, I am a little confused about something though, does trout season not start in November? Or is it different when it's up north?

Oh, and he definitely prefers lakes to rivers too, I forgot to mention that.

Up north is different.. actually more like opposite. Most of the high elevation country is. It isn't even accessible during the winter, snows, landslides, etc . The Sierra Nevada is a different beast for sure. I have tons of ideas about campgrounds and tactics depending on what you want to do, but cabins should be available around lone pine, independence, George's creek, etc that would meet your needs, hotels etc...

I wanted to tent camp if possible, but it doesn't sound like it's the time of year for that up there. I'm also definitely open to things closer though. Are there any good lakes to tent camp at in or around San Diego? My only thought so far is possibly Lake Cuyamaca, but I'm not sure how busy it will be. The only problem with staying in San Diego, is I was hoping to spend the last night in a hotel or Airbnb. But everything is so expensive in San Diego. :/ But maybe it wouldn't be so bad to just have a cabin up north. It doesn HAVE to be a tent. I just know he likes roughing it :p

By the way, thank you for your help :)

No worries! Besides, I was looking at the Inyo county fishing website thing, and the sounds like there are some small lakes that are good for fishing year round! So, you've set me on a good path : )

There are lakes, cabins and hotels super reasonable up there from mid September to mid November. Diaz lake is fishable pretty much year round, and lake tinemaha is just to the north a bit. For campgrounds, I have a few I like, including one at 5$/night.. if you want, I can PM you

    What about Bridgeport? Twin-Lakes?

Is that even Inyo County? Maybe Mono?

Camping is available at a few lakes in or near SD county. There is Lake Morena, Lake Jennings, Dixon Lake, Lake Cuyamca. Near Idyllwild, there is Lake Hemet in Garner Valley. So there's camping and trout fishing closer than you think.

Its a bit pricey but I’ve enjoyed getting a houseboat on Lk Shasta in Dec. It’s off season so the houseboating experience is as cheap as they come, the lake is virtually empty, fishing for trout is really good and simple to catch fish. We usually rent out of Holiday Harbor for 4 days 3 nights and have a blast trolling up and down the lake. The lake is in REALLY good form with rainbow/brown trout plus they’ve started stocking kokanee salmon in addition to the inland chinook salmon. It’s a bit further than specified and not a cheap trip but it will be scenic, quiet, comfortable in the cold and is probably one of the best trout fisheries in Dec that I know of at the moment.

Here's a place close by. The State Campground is just outside of the village of Idyllwild, walking distance.
We used to live there. If you go to the Federal Park Service in town you can get a pass so that you don't have to pay the lake permit at Lake Hemet, the road to the lake is north of the lake campground on federal land. Lake Fulmer is a nice little lake also.
The map shows the state campground in relation to Lake Hemet, it's a little bit of a drive but not too bad.
You will be camping around other people though. If you go in December there will be snow probably.
