I've been fishing the kayak at Hodges this year for a few crappie here and there, some bigger fish over 3, but no good "stringers" for me so far.

To simplify, I just wanted to do some shore fishing. Hiked in for some shoreline crappie fishing with my 9'6" "microlight" crappie rod. Schools of shad were all over the shoreline with some fish behind them.

Tried for crappie for a couple hours with crappie jigs deep and shallow, for no luck. Decided to switch it up. If crappie didn't want to bite, it was clear that fish were out there chasing the shad schools.

First toss of the pumpkin Ika got inhaled, and, suddenly I felt a little "under-gunned". The rod went pretty full bendo for about 10 - 15 minutes with six pound leader. Really lucky to get this one in through the sticks and rocks.

Personal Best catfish - went 10 lbs on the digital scale.

So I re-tied my 6 lb. flouro leader due to the nicks and scrapes. Then I hooked another solid fish, which kicked my ***.

The bass was 5.7 on the digital scale, probably the smallest fish caught!

I had a blast out there. Pretty good day without the kayak. The key was tipping the tiny jighead with some smelly bait fishing the rocky areas. Didn't keep any of these fish. A bunch of fun right there catching a handful of nice fish on the ultralight.

PSA: WATCH YOUR STEP when hiking! A baby rattler RIGHT frick'ing on the path.

That's some nice quality fish, and that's the most catfish I have seen someone catch lure fishing

The bass fishermen catch them all the time on bass lures. A Gulp minnow would likely be a good choice and would've worked, if I had any on hand!

What a blast on light tackle. That 9'6" probably launched those baits way out there.

With the right weighted-cigar-slip-bobber rig, this rod catches crappie up to 70 yards out, I use it mainly at Sweetwater. However, these fish were generally cornering shad right on the shoreline dropoffs and only 5 - 15 feet out from shore.

You can always count on a kitty in that section of the lake. Hotspot right there
