What up guys! Not new to SD fish but first post... I jus picked up some of those new Hook up baits and wanted to try em out for a quick afternoon session in Harbor Island tomorrow around 530pm. If anyone is heading out let me know.

I tried fishing with them a little at Dana point today with no luck from the surf. Pretty sure I'll get something tomorrow.

Your session tomorrow...from shore or boat? They are hard to fish from shore, easy from boat. Drop em and thumb them down on rock piles. Reel up and free spool back down.

I believe in Hook Up Baits but in the proper environment. I find them very effective off docks, piers and boats where you can take advantage of a vertical drop. They flutter well and most of my bites have been on the drop.

However, due to the open hook as opposed to a weedless hook presentation, they do not do so well in the horizontal mode where the exposed hook will tend to snag algae, seaweed, rebar, pipes, sunken junk and rocks.

From shore, unless you can cast a mile, you will be in shallow water. Popping through eel grass is easy enough and I get bites when I rip through it.

Harbor island is a good place to use Hookup Baits. It has sparse eel grass and sand flats. Just pop it to the surface the last 5-10 feet to avoid the seaweed as you approach the rocks.

My criticisms of Hookup Baits are that they are expensive, not weedless, the hooks break, and the bait generally averages only 3-5 fish before they are too torn up to use.

Pros: When you don't get tangled they get bit.

However, I have diversified and learned to Drop Shot and Texas Rig when the structure dictates it.

Landed roughly 25 today in SD bay from the yak and I'd say 15 were on HUB and the other 10 were in a 100g shimano flat fall. Had to go heavy as the current was insane. All fish in 35-40' of water and on structure/rockpiles. Those two lures out performed live bait and drop shot gulp.
Hook up baits definitely get bit, and definitely get chewed to pieces.
