I want to start a small garden and some planter boxes.
I have a 15x4 space to dig up and add some soil.
Ill probably have some pepper plants in pots. So what should i grow in the bigger space?
I have bad luck with tomatoes

If you get heirloom tomatoes a lot of resistance can be bred into them without being a GMO.

I got started Bonnie heirloom non GMO beefsteaks that were 4" on 3/30 and now over a foot tall in 15 gallon pots. Resistant to tomato worm and one other pest. It's all in the water. Too much and too little is bad and never wet the foliage.

What harm comes from wetting the leaves?

Not positive but I think that it encourages a type of a mold to form on the leaves.

Fine mesh because gophers don't need much to get through.

Mold and mildew. Same with roses.
Technically with flowers too but there are usually so many that it's a pain to water only the bases. You can shower a flower bed lightly but early enough so the foliage can dry out before night comes.

For your bed....maybe squash, lettuce....what ever you like.

Another hint, just read recently to mix in some marigolds in your free spots. They have anti pest properties/natural occurring chems that can help your garden out. Also they can provide ground coverage to retain moisture better.

I dont think i have any gophers.
should i add any nutrients in or is good bags of soil enough?
Has anyone used pig poop for fertilizer? Every summer i get some random tomato plants growing from feeding him tomatoes. Those seem to last longer than the ones i plant and try to take care of.

Pests meaning white flies, hook worms, aphids, nematodes etc...
Read a bunch last night. Basil is also a good pest deterrent.
Then you got basil for your tomatoes and mozzarella salad.

Good organic soil is enough and lightly fertilize about two times with a type for food crops.

Drop "coplanting with tomatoes" in google.

Put the screen anyway. If gophers show up it would be a massive chore to add after.

Animals eat stuff, poop out the seeds somewhere else, and new plants grow. 'Tis the natural order of things, organic as you can get.

I just planted seeds for squash, cucumbers and roma tomatoes. Tomatoes and bell peppers are hard to start from seeds. I use Jerry Baker gardening books. It shows how to kill bugs and use soap and water to repel insects. I go to the mushroom farm and get dirt for my garden. It is free just shovel it in the truck bed.

It is in Escondido. Take north broadway and follow it till near a dead end. They grow mushrooms and throw it away after use.

Can you use it straight or do you mix it. I would like to use it for vegetable planter boxes.
