Have a minute waiting on a crew, so I figured I could post this, as I get rigging questions all the time. So for Vito1023 and anyone else who has asked me how I rig for the rocks and surf, Ucsdsu filmed a very short rigging video to explain how I go about it. It's simple, easy to tie, and strong.

One of my go-to knots. Learn it well because if you ain't losing rigs you ain't fishing the right spots. :emoji_joy:

At least, if the weight gets snagged, you can snap it off and get your hook/fish back

Thanks Coach that was very helpful as I’ve been wondering how to tie both knots so you’ve helped me out a lot, very easy to follow.

I legit watched this video on YouTube randomly today. What are the chances! Thanks for the instructions.

Question though, will my Carolina rig work for jetty fishing? How about for targeting rays?

    Appreciate you

Targeting rays on the sand or surf, yes.. the jetty, fishing in the rocks, probably not real well. That loose tag end with the hook is just flat out begging to wrap around a rock, mussel, kelp etc, especially if you hook a fish that likes to dive into the crap.. like well.. almost anything, calico, Garibaldi, wrasse, sheep, about anything.. only hope for the C rig in my mind, would be to reel it up to the edge of the rocks and kelp, hoping whatever picks it up doesn't double back into the rocks or dive straight down ....

Thank you, it's now one of a couple go to knots I use regularly.

So I found a link here to your podcast a while back... Well done. :emoji_thumbsup:

OK, Coach. Couple of questions for ya.
    1) Is the SH actually different from say a 4 turn surgeon's?
    2) are you tying the hook on the end of that loop with a palomar?
    3) Seems like you need a lot of line to wrap around the thumb, so you end up with a pretty long loop. Anyway to shorten it up?

I watched the video 3 times and then followed along to tie it. When I pull on the ends, I get a breakage at the SH knot, not the surgeon's loop on the end. Looks like its pinching the line off. Maybe I am tying it wrong? I replicated it three times this morning. Thoughts?

The downhill side of that knot is it's weak spot, that's where it breaks, and why it isn't suitable for rigging in series.. and why it's important to rig a breakaway for your weight too.. you can Palomar on the end of the loop, a good idea if you use it in really nasty areas or for the toothier creatures.

So, if you get your weight snagged, is the line supposed to break at the surgeon's loop or at the bottom end of the SH? I was under the impression the SL was supposed to break, but that's not what I'm seeing. After it breaks and I pull on the SH loop, it comes undone pretty easy (bye, fishy!). I will try this thing again over the weekend, but I might be in need of a clinic!

Might try different numbers of turns. Some mono acts differently, what kind are you using?

Try a turn less or more.. I would say less since xxx is a fairly hard finish

    Such a handsome guy! Lol

I’m gonna definitely practice that knot, now that I have a while before I wet a line again
