I have recently taken up fishing from a very long hiatus. I have been reading this forum trying to absorb all of your wisdom and tips. I was not going to post anything until I finally caught something. I have been fishing for about a month and have gone out at least once a week (sometimes two or three times) and have gone out in the morning, sunset, and midday... no luck at all until last Monday when I finally caught something... a small hali on Midway dock.

I have been to the following places: Harbor Island (right side), Shelter Island (left side coming in - on the rocks), Midway (both sides), Fiesta Island (caught a lot of eel grass), Hospitality Point (from where the jetty starts all the way around to behind the lifeguard building and even a little on the river side).

I have a baitcaster and and medium heavy ugly stik. I have been dropshotting with a 1/0 hook and a 3/4 oz weight. I started with 12 lb. mono then switched to 8 lb. fluorocarbon and just recently changed to #30 braid and use the either of the mono as my leader. I have been tossing 3 or 4 inch gulp shrimp, 3 in. gulp mullets, small 2 to 3 inch minnows and a couple of different sizes of big hammers. I have not tried frozen shrimp or squid but I may give it a try this weekend.

I have been reading that is has been a little slow but I am hoping you guys can give me some tips on where to go and how to be more successful.

    Thanks in Advance!

You're off to a great start! I recommend a texas rig for fishing that eel grass around fiesta island. You can fish it with an exposed hook, but it takes some figuring to find the depth of the grass and keep your lure just above it. T-rig is basically easy mode for that situation.

That one looks like a Starry Flounder to me , just seems a little too narrow in the middle . Poor nutrition or stage of life thing ? Thanks for the report . Glad to see someone get back into fishing . WR

Cut the squid into 1/4" wide strips and hook them so they trail behind the bait. ( gulp or whatever) This will likely double your bites.

Think it's the angle of the shot, William Ritchie ... Hmm, not a great photo for ID... Has white spots though...

MrDrew , fish with me at hospitality once, and I can show you another method that can result in many many fish per hour... Might require an adjustment to your ideology, but...

You’re off to a great start. This is a very helpful community; all you have to do is post reports from when you get a line wet: conditions, rough location, how/if you caught anything, other observations. Help out others when you can. All the folks here are super helpful and only ask that you pay it forward.

I’d take Werfless up on his offer if you can. If you’ve read enough on these boards you’ll recognize him as the guy to put you on fish. Post and read as much as you can. PM some of the VIPs if that’s more comfortable. You’re in the right place tho, that’s for sure. Tight lines coming your way soon.

Two 7’6” rods, 3000 sized reels rigged with high/low dropper loops. 2oz leads. Cut shrimp. One slightly heavier rod I’m gonna troll a shallow diver with. And another lighter bass setup for flipping irons and grubs on jig heads if I get bored. Plus a cooler backpack of beers. Cuz why not... I’m on vacation this week man. :emoji_laughing:

Thanks! I will keep that in mind. Do you T-rig all the time or just when it's needed?

Whelp... all sailing no fishing. Heading back into the marina. Gonna wet the lines once we pull into the slip and toss back a couple. I’d complain but... why? Haha

I generally only t-rig in heavy cover, when it's needed. Like I said, those heavy grass areas and also the jetties or large riprap.

Thanks everyone. I am looking for a good morning spot to try out the new spider hitch rig with #6 hook and shrimp. I am thinking Quivira but I am open to suggestions. I would like somewhere to get some action but they don't need to be keepers... just the opportunity of a keeper :) Looks like it will be receding tide with low tide @ 1030AM. Thanks!
