    Just hanging out on the boat tonight, soaking some macks while I fish for spotties. About 10 minutes in, line starts screaming off my penn. another 10 minutes later, I had the biggest butterfly ray I’ve ever seen up along the dock. I was too lazy to do a heavy leader and ended up just cutting the line at the hook as I had no idea how to get this thing on the dock. I’m no good at guessing weights but wingspan was massive, probably a conservative 5’. Wish I had a picture but I was solo so I had no intentions of pulling out my phone. Just dropped in a new mackerel chunk and did some more chumming. Will keep posted. 4D3D9ACE-887C-415D-A42F-B6BE0E0A31F5.jpeg

    damn, would have liked to see a picture of that! I've seen some pictures of massive butterfly rays caught in South Africa.

    I really wish I could have gotten some but it was way too big to get up on the dock without a couple gaffs. I had one but really wanted to avoid using it.

    I have seen three in person that had 4ft or more wingspan. I know stealth bombing alien aircrafts are real. Who knows if it happened or not. That's what makes a fish story it's part of the sport. Sometimes your fellow fisherman need to check the story though.

    Seeing it for myself was good enough for me, I could care less if anyone else believes me or not. I’d love to see any of you guys pull something that big onto the dock for a pic without harming the ray. My only way of measuring was to use my armspan which was only slightly wider.

    I haven’t personally seen one that big but we do have some hefty ones roaming around. A buddy of mine caught one well over 4’ across. I caught one just over 3’ wing tip to wing tip from my tube. They’re out there.

    IGFA records are broken all the time. Killing something that big that I don’t plan on eating and going through the whole process isn’t worth a piece of paper to me. If it was a tuna or something, that might be a different story.

    Sounds cool. I would have liked to have seen that. Maybe those guys giving you a hard time are joking? I hope so. I think all those stories about fishmen lying are just that - jokes.

    California Butterfly Ray's grow to a maximum width of around 4'-11" so it's not so hard to believe

    That's not a CAlifornia Butterfly ray. Cindy Krieger's IFGA record California butterfly ray caught in San Diego bay in October of 2015 was 38"

    Girth is the measurement AROUND the widest part of the fish. Therefore, the IGFA girth reported at 76" would indicate a wingspan of 38" (3'2").

    " Females attain greater sizes than males, with a maximum reported disc width of 150 cm (Castro-Aguire 1965). However, this size is generalized, and the largest measured specimen was 125 cm DW (Bizzarro 2005)."

    125cm = 4.1 ft.

    That's why I said, "I hope they are joking". It's hard to tell who actually knows who.

    I can relate everytime I think I'm being funny on here I get *crickets*. :emoji_smiley:
