If it's spring, then it must be time for redears and bluegill. You would think, but it still seems a bit early, at least at San Vicente where I went this morning. The water temperature was just 60.3° when I launched, slipping up to almost 64° by noon. Bluegill were a no-show for me, but I did find a few redear. I did not see any near the shore, but did find a few nice ones in the 25 to 30 feet range. I was using pinched night crawlers, so naturally bass were a nuisance too. I was releasing everything, but then caught one with some barotrauma. I tried pushing everything back in, but it just slipped back out. I was reluctant to pierce it, since I didn't know exactly what it was. Fortunately, I came up a brilliant alternate plan. Redear for supper! But I needed another to fill out a meal for us. I kept the next one and brought them both home.

Dang, that looks like fun. Now all you need is cornmeal and some hot oil.

Thanks. Yes, if those weren't the largest I caught yesterday, they were close with several more about the same size. Huge by most standards, but two pound redear don't even raise an eyebrow at San V.

Its about the time for San V. I found a good school of 1-3 lb redears around this time last year.

Nice fish. Usually it’s “if it’s spring you have 3-5x more people at the lake asking if you’ve seen any fish on beds.”
