"Self manage now by avoiding the take of sheephead for the remainder of 2021 or face possible future access and regulatory processes". If it can save the fishery then I'm all for it. Question is: Where is the data coming from? Sport boat and Commercial counts?

Yeah... The sheep head numbers they are going off are all kinds of wrong, good luck preventing overregulation...

Again, I'm all for conserving the sheephead fishery. I couldn't find anything online regarding sheephead numbers except for fish reports from the landings in NorCal, LA, OC and SD. Where's the data? Is CA DFW going of dock totals? Is this some sort of summer project for Scripps interns?

Yeah, um you won't have visibility to that unless they release a public report, slim to no chance of that...

It seems like there are a lot more males ( black - pink ) than females. You don’t see many females in the 5+lb range. I once caught a 6lb female on a 3/4 day boat out of San Pedro when I was a kid so I know the females can get fairly big. They change sex at some point, so maybe the DFW isn’t seeing enough bigger females? ( I’m throwing darts here ).

Just from optics, I know that this year has been the most Sheeps I've seen posted ever.
1/2 day boats, Spearos, PBs... May not amount to much or could be related to the overall situation, you never can tell

Kam_Walsh98 has an interesting perspective and his personal experience supports this. I've only caught 1 barely legal female (hehe) before. Still wouldn't mind harvesting my first good eater. Never tried them.

I totally agree.. Seems like I’ve seen lots of Sheep posted this last year, more than normal. I myself have caught a handful of nice goats, and it’s rare that I even get one per year. Maybe there’s an over abundance of the damn things! Lol.

Recruitment has just been good the last couple years, that's all. DFG jumping the gun to stomp on fishermen some more as usual..

Fish start to become sexually mature at smaller sizes when they're starting to become overfished. With most fish we can't see any evidence of this until we cut them open, but sheephead are relatively unique in that their physical appearance drastically changes in response to different stages in their life cycle. The small average size of fully terminal red/black/white males here is very different from the much larger average size in more remote habitats like the Channel Islands. Look at the average size of the sheephead filmed in a Channel Islands MPA in the Blue Planet 2 episode "Green Seas." These fish aren't on some secret deep rock pile or wreck, they're in the shallow, visible kelp. Now compare that with the average sized sheephead harvested in San Diego kelp beds. This doesn't provide any concrete evidence, but it suggests that something is causing sheephead in more heavily pressured areas to feel the need to turn into reproductively viable males sooner. Now think of this alongside the fact that DFG is reporting consecutive years of reported sheephead catches being far higher than allotted. Coincidence?

I just don't get what's so hard about just releasing them from now on. Maybe one or two every now and then. Anytime you're on a sheephead bite, you're inevitably catching lots of other bottom critters that are also good (or even better) eating.

all I can say is i’ve personally caught more sheepshead in the last 3 years than in the 45 previous years combined, Seems to indicate thriving population

Self regulation is fine but honestly taking a few to eat and share the experience with the young guys and girls coming up should be ok. I’m 63 and never have seen sheephead so frequently. Fishing locally since 2nd grade.

They will use any excuse to close more of our fishery down. Even if they have to make it up.
