Do you guys have any advice for yellowtail fishing in the kelp beds? I am new to kelp bed fishing, and have caught some bass, but am looking for more quality fish like yellowtail. Any advice?
    Thank you,
    Leo

Big live bait.. slow troll and dropper loop. Drag rapalas or halcos off the kelp a few yards or a hundred.. keep on it

What he said. A kelp cutter rig with a short 6’ -8’ topshot on braid will increase your chances in the thick stuff.

My best luck is with trolling outside kelp 20 - 100 yards with rapala or yozuri. Slow trolling live bait or anchoring outside of kelp with live bait has also worked for me, especially if you can anchor on or near significant structure.

    What he said and.

Make sure you have gear (reel, pole, line) up to the task. Some peeps like to catch Yellowtail on the lightest gear possible. It’s possible but you may become a statistic.

Seals prowl those very same waters and you don’t have time to finesse a Yellowtail in Kelp.

First, seals aside, a Yellowtail has a survival instinct that is amazing. If Kelp present, they will purposely tangle themselves in the Kelp and break you off. If rocks present, they will wrap around rocks and break you off......Now add the Seal element, and you’ve got a time clock on your fight. The longer you fight your yellow, advantage Seal.......When your YT freaks out erratically(generally closer to the boat) sometimes the only thing you can do is put the reel in freespool and let the YT’s speed help it get away from the seal......

Good luck. Have the right equipment and sense of urgency and a bit of luck. Reeling in a YT is an accomplishment I hope you can experience. When eating it, remember how hard it fought or the seal you stole it from.

Like everyone else said, trolling rapalas and bait along the edge of the kelp is probably the best strategy, plus you can use much heavier gear to really horse in the fish which can be really helpful in situations as Geofish brought up. Plus you cover a lot more ground.

Good points! They definitely charge to kelp or bottom structure. You need heavy enough gear to control them if you hook a larger tail near kelp...
