    I used it in the late 80's and early 90's.

    Apparently it is legal. Here is the section on bait in the regulation. It is not legal to chum with corn anywhere except the Salton Sea. That was the only mention of corn when I did a search of the Adobe Reader version of the regulation. (Way too much time on my hands.)

    4.00. Bait-General.
    Legally acquired and possessed invertebrates, mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians (except salamanders), fish eggs and treated and processed foods may be used for bait, except:
    (a) No species specified as endangered, threatened, candidate, fully-protected, or otherwise protected under state and federal law may be used as bait.
    (b) No salamander may be used as bait. See section 5.05 for other amphibians that may be used as bait.
    (c) See Section 5.35 for restrictions on crayfish;
    (d) See Section 7.50(b)(74) for restriction on bait collecting in Hat Creek;
    (e) No trout may be maintained or possessed in a live condition in any container on or attached to any boat;
    (f) Except for restrictions listed under special regulations, dead ocean fish may be used as bait statewide. This section supersedes the provisions of sections 4.10, 4.15, 4.20, 4.25 and 4.30.

    Well that's kind of a surprise. I always put my trout in a pot or on a stringer to keep them alive till I can get them to the cleaning station. I don't carry the ice chest on the boat and want my fish to be in the best of condition until they are cleaned. :0(

    And almost every other boat that I see on a trout lake has a stringer or a pot attached to it if they have caught any fish.

    I have often wondered if that rule on the live trout was just in there as an enforcement alternative when it was not possible to prove that someone was actually fishing with the live trout. People who do fish with the trout can be really sneaky, and it is an easy matter to clip the line when another boat approaches or shows too much interest. With this rule, they can be nailed for possessing the live trout at least. There has been a lot of chatter recently about using trout for the big stripers at DVL. There are some that are convinced that those who do well consistently are using trout.

    I remember some years ago, while fishing at Skinner. Some guy came up to me and started chatting. He was remarking about some guys that were "trout fishing" with big heavy surf rods. "They didn't even know they had caught any trout. When they wound in their line, the trout had been on there so long that they were already dead" he said. I guess he didn't know that there were some big stripers in the lake that those guys wanted.

    Corn works and has never been illegal. Velvetta cheeze is OLD school power bait. Just a hot tip.

    Well, at least if you didn't catch anything with that, you could always spread it on some crackers and have yourself a snack.

    True Bassgal. Caught many trout off velveeta cheese around San Diego Cove. Been fishing at Miramar for a long time, when I was 14.
