It seems that the stairway south of seal rock south of children’s pool in LJ would be a shorter paddle to the kelp beds? Any thoughts? My son and i are in a tandem kayak and the stairs arent an issue.

Windnsea or marine st, you won't have a problem. Some of the beaches by the CP are marked with different regulations, and I have heard of lifeguards prohibiting a launch from some areas. Get out of sight of the lifeguard station, you will probably get a hassle free launch

Let’s just say I’ve been launching from that same area for 5 years now... haven’t really had an issue there. Saves a lot of time if you launch there.

Isn't there a lot more surf that makes departures/arrivals a little challenging?

So there’s a whomp on both sides.. BUT, on low surf and if you time it between sets it’s not that bad.

There's a negative connotation associated with whomp but not sure what exactly you mean.

A whomp is a wave that crashes right on shore. And honestly it can’t be that hard to deal with at times... but with anything over 3ft the whomp there can get pretty bad. Your fine if you just wait between sets though.
