So, hit the valley with Roncador for a Fri night and Saturday morning.. mixed bag all the way around. Cats were there, but we didn't grind too hard. Slowed down until the bite picked up after 11:30 then put a few into the coolers, taking a rest after 3 AM.
    As usual:
Tossed some back we could have kept
Kept some we might not due to hooking bad/deep
Caught some species no one cares about
Caught a couple bass (monsters I say!) on chunk or strip bait
Lost plenty of opportunities on good fish

Didn't throw any back too big (though we could have)...

Big fish was around 19" or so if I had to guess, a catfish in a spot where Roncador , Bear6813 and I have been broken off numerous times, so decided harvest was in our best interest, this fish was a once in awhile harvest. This fish was fat, I would say at least 3.5# if not 4... I typically don't prefer catfish this size or larger in the pan if I have a choice... This fish had been causing havoc, so into the cooler it went, thing was a beast.

Caught this very odd tilapia hybrid (?) Or whatever in this one pond.. ideas anyone?

Got quite a few, with numbers running between 46-50 depending on how it was counted. Released most all the panfish and carp other than four, with thirteen fish total kept in the end for one reason or another.. the ones used for bait went back in the canal system... The pancakes with legs and heads showed up for a couple appearances as well, nothing worth messing with though, IMO

Slow but enjoyable session for two dudes and a kid or two willing to learn... Total species count of.. six maybe? You tell me

See? I see how you are.. claiming you catch dinks at that mudhole by your house.. when I catch THOSE in the desert, trying to make me feel bad! HAHAHA! Pretty sure your biggest bass this year is bigger than my biggest catfish this year, lol... I am just getting started though, will see if I can't pull out a beast by year end, fall is just getting started, and the carp have been cooperating. Wish Ucsdsu would post that damn footage of the high teen to low twenty lb class carp I caught earlier this year so I can crow about how great I am, hahaha... Ah well, another day in paradise, just ribbing you man, thanks for all the love you send my way and your own great reports, I appreciate them immensely. Much respect, seriously

Looks like a Jack Dempsey - Firemouth cichlid cross, but sure looks like some sort of Central American cichlid.

That "tilapia" almost looks like a mayan cichlid.

The IV is still out there... Pick a road, drive.. fish everything, be stealthy, use light gear, fresh bait, small hooks, no weight.. easy enough to figure out...

I'm no expert, but could that be a baby hybrid peacock bass? Or is that just another name for cichlids? pcb.png

Cichlids have thousands of species in the family as near as I know.. that is just one of many, tilapia are a whole group of cichlids... Many hybridize as well, making identification almost impossible sometimes

I once saw juvenile cichlids having one parent from Lake Malawi and one parent from Lake Tanganyika. Looked like the car from Johnny Cash’s “One Piece at a Time.”

A guy told me about a cichlid breeder who tried to sell him a Cyphotilapia frontosa with six stripes (a subspecies) on its left side and seven stripes (a second subspecies) on its right side.

It's not that far between you and the north end out there.. good bass fishing sometimes if the wind is from the right direction...
