The only reason for this post is to share some of my stoke, hopefully you didn't click it expecting something informational or educational lol. Thursday night I'm going out on an overnight on the Islander. I'm super pumped! One of the vendors I use for work treats some of their clients to an all expense paid overnight tuna trip and this is the third time I've been invited. My game plan this year: do not get drunk off the free booze because last year I started off my morning by barfing over the rail and had to run down to my bunk to assume the fetal position every time the boat started moving again. I still caught 4 fish, but man that trip sucked. I'm hoping to top this fish that I caught on my first time out, it's pretty much the biggest thing I've ever caught.

That's part 1 of the stoke. Part 2 is that my parents are taking me, my wife and kids, and my brother and his wife to Kauai this year in September. Using The Golden Child™ (my little brother) as leverage, I convinced my mom to charter us a private fishing trip. The last time I went fishing in Kauai was 17 or 18 years ago and I didn't catch a thing, but my grandpa caught this.

Hopefully I get a bigger one than that so I can brag about it to the old fart. He gets his feelings hurt when I catch more/bigger fish than he does :D

Anyway, that's all I got. Thanks for reading!

Yeah, he definitely earned it so I'm not mad about it but he's absolutely the favorite lol. I spent my younger years getting into trouble, partying, and having fun while he spent his getting awesome grades, a baseball scholarship to Duke, and a degree from Georgetown medicine.

So, I'm thinking about bringing a couple rods with me to Kauai so that I can fish off the rocks by our condo. Anyone have a recommendation on how to package up the rods so that they survive the horrors of baggage handling? I was thinking of getting some foam or something similar and cutting out an insert to fit the rod into before I put it in this Tackle Warehouse rod shipping tube I have in my garage.

I have a legitimate rod travel case you can use, rods up to 7’ I think. I’m in Poway.

    Ohhh, good tip. Thanks!

Fingers crossed that I have something worthwhile to post :D

That's mighty generous of you, thank you! Unfortunately I think all of my rods are too long. I'm thinking of bringing a 7'5 and a 7'10.

It was the biggest fish of that trip, but it was my first time on a sport boat so I didn't know about jackpots and all that; I didn't bring cash to buy in. When that fish hit, I was actually trying to clear a backlash and the line looped around the handle and was cinched tight. Had deckhands and even the captain down there trying to get it free, but they eventually just cut the line and spliced it onto another rod. Then that fish worked me due to my puny little IT guy arms. Good times :D I slapped a big bloody handprint on my white shirt to celebrate the catch. Too bad it's mostly washed out now.

It's all technique... I've seen a guy who is barely over 5ft tall and weigh barely over a buck land a 223lb cow on a 10ft jig stick with 40lb in 45 minutes.

I think Okuma, Six Gill, and Squidco sell two piece rods and maybe even four piece rods too.

That's wild, that fish weighed twice as much as he did. Now I feel really bad about myself, lol. I'm feeling more confident this year for sure, but I need more practice. I've caught 6 tuna total in my life and other than those fish, nothing bigger than maybe a 3 or 4 lb calico.

I thought about picking up a travel rod, but I don't know how many more fishing purchases my marriage can endure this year... lol

An alternative is just buying something cheap on the island, but I like my gear and I'm kinda spoiled by it.

That's the thing, it was Stinger, aka Ray Montero... probably one of the fishiest people if not the fishiest out of the San Diego landings. He's been doing this since the 70's so yeah he'd be good. Give yourself a bit of time and I'm sure you will get there, you have a dedicated passion to fishing and you seem to picking up more knowledge which is really cool to see, go get them man!

I do not like the Okuma Nomad in terms of a travel rod... It's action is trash and it fishes much heavier then what it is rated for in terms of weight. SixGill has one which I'm willing to pick up.
