Here is a longer calico video (finally) to go with my report from four weeks ago. My GoPro locked up on me after an hour or so, but still managed plenty of good calico footage - 18 minutes of this action is probably enough to get the idea. It was pretty fun all day, much like lots of days over the last couple of years locally when the water temp is stable - current, kelp, chovies, calicos and cuda.

Sometimes I just feel like fishing bass - it's close, easy, and super fun!

I get the feeling you know what you're doing! I would have been tempted to put on a Kroc, but what do I know?

    Fun watch! Thanks!

Well you know a lot. A Kroc would work for sure Fisheromen! One of my favorite baits further offshore on the kayak is a big Kroc with a large greenback mackerel on it - nose hooked. Big fish bait.

I'm a Kroc fan ... usually when there are bonito around, because I love bonito sashimi. Calicos love Krocs too, but on that particular day would lead to endless hooking of the baby barracuda that were around by the thousands - on a treble hook - which is a disaster and total nuisance. Cannot grab them, gaff them, net them or let them touch the kayak without creating a slippery slimy mess!

I'm sure I could've caught fish on anything in those wide-open conditions - Spook, Sammy, Jitterbug, Hula popper, fluke, maybe even a frog! I will bring out my freshwater spinning gear one of these days with the GoPro for goofing around like that, but even 15 lb braid is considered "ultralight" out there over the kelp stringers. That's why you see me purposefully 'horsing' these fish to the kayak quickly on the surface.

I prefer the simplicity of the long-casting, single-hook iron but will lose fish like those bigger ones that I missed and farmed in the video ...

I noticed you did not want to touch that slime stick! ;)

That looks super fun and great action for chilly water! What hook did you use and am how did you attach it to the iron? Short 10-24 and some wire?

You buy light surface irons with the single hook option - all good tackle stores in SoCal will have a wall of these jigs to choose from, like Seaforth Sportfishing or any other landing store.
