I used to fish the upper Kern as a kid all the time and plan on going back there for the first time in 19 years for the first week of September, any recommendations on campgrounds to stay at? My main priority is fishing and I'm not too concerned with campground amenities as long as there is a toilet and a water spigot.

Used to go there once during spring and once during summer, I annihilated my family in our fishing competitions....but like I said, it's been 19 years.

All the campgrounds from kernville to johnsondale bridge should fulfill your needs then.. river gets a lot of play though might have to move around to dodge inner-tubers and the like

Whats the best technique for the kern trout?

Salmon eggs on bobber w/ leader or spinning lures?

I've been interested in spending a weekend there sometime

All along Kern (especially uppper), spinners, spoons, eggs work really well. Up past Johnsondale Bridge I usually use a spoon in red/gold color and crimp the barbs. Fly/bubble method work really good up in that section as well, some massive trout if you head in far enough.

Head to the dam at sunset, there is a good bite there on the fly. If you have a spinning setup, take a look at the fly and bubble method, that usually kills it with trout in that area.

Upper Kern is where I plan on going and it sounds like that will work out for us and I just need to pick a campground, thank you for the replies.

Just don't go to the south fork up by Kennedy Meadows. I was up there a couple of weeks ago and the south fork is dried up to just a few stagnant puddles amongst the rocks. I have never seen that river when it wasn't flowing before.

I thought most of that area is just open camping? But every time I see it, especially closer to kernville its crazy busy.
