Hit up the La Jolla Kelp for a few hours on Father's Day with aquaholic and geofish hoping to see what was biting. Mainly had the intention to get live bait and focus on yellowtail and the hot Calico bite. Picked up bait around 0615ish, and it was a mix of anchovies and sardines but it was in super rough shape, and almost half was dead from the start. Very disappointing for $40 of course. Anyway, headed out there and started drifting through the Kelp most of the day, probably caught maybe 40ish Calicos total, the prize one caught by geofish where he had to wrestle it out of the Kelp on multiple occasions. Weighed in at just over 6lbs if I remember right (he may remember exact weight). All Calicos released to fight another day. Also caught a handful of small Cudas that were chasing bait all day, and ended the day with maybe an hour or rockfishing and caught a few for the cooler. Overall, beautiful weather and great company, hopefully we get some yellowtail action next trip.

Way to go get it done guys. Sux to hear about the bait. I was on the dolphin yesterday, and the calico bite was definitely on at the kelp. Our bait was in good shape - more anchovies than deans, prob got the cured load. Thanks for the post as usual, keep 'em coming!

Not too late bro. You've got a kayak, I've got a kayak. I'm training for a La Jolla beach launch trip from LJ Shores. Let's do it! I hope you're training too!

Make sure you have a VHS radio. I have one, it'll help us communicate.

    See the thread: Kayak Essentials

Let me know when you think you're ready. 2 Saturdays ago I was supposed to go but the wind and waves didn't cooperate.

Lj isn't that bad of a launch usually.. Just make sure you can paddle a couple hours straight and you are good. No reason for me to go back and fish any more after the north end went mlpa, but hey..

So in other words, you're fine as long as you target pelagic fish?

When you go prepare to flip. You usually don't flip going out, but coming back in, plan for it. Tie everything down. I stow my rods in the hull/hatch so when I do flip nothing is lost. Not sure what others do.
