My kid is showing a great interest in getting out on the Ocean (previous bay fisherman ) and had our first outing today. Caught some bait fish on light tackle in mission Bay and then headed out to La jolla (we have small rigid inflatable ). Had our first catch of the day and checked our fish& Game booklet to try and identify it. Couldn't seem to be sure, so thought I would ask the Pro's here.
Looking to learn and get out there enjoying the family fun ![

If you are new to that area, be VERY careful the locations you fish so you aren't in the Marine Protected Area. Honestly I can't be positive (maybe someone else can confirm), but based on the background in the photos it sorta looks like you are inside the one that is just north of the Jetty a bit, sort of where the kelp starts at. Huge huge huge fines if you fish there. I'd check the map and if in fact you were in one I'd suggest taking the photo down........... Just trying to help you stay outta trouble. Like I said I could be wrong as all I can see is some buildings, but maybe someone that's been doing it longer can chime in. Glad you had fun out there! Nice catch!

Here is a photo of the area I mean. It is unmarked but in the regs.

Not trying to scold you or anything if you were in it, just trying to look out for a fellow fisherman and spread awareness of those unmarked areas so nobody gets in trouble.

Appreciate the feedback. We made a point of hanging around where the others were fishing, so we would stay out of the reserve. Also unsure of our fish recognition, so immediately released our catch. Will make sure we map out the reserve on the GPS next time

Yeah it is good you released it if you weren't sure. I've always been amazed those MPAs aren't marked as lots of guys fish there not knowing it is illegal. They are frustrating areas for us all. Heard plenty of horror stories of people getting big tickets because they didn't read the regulations closely enough regarding the zones. Most of the local tackle shops have laminated guides and you can punch them into your GPS that are a bit easier to use. Anyway, glad you had a good day with your son and learned a thing or two, see you out there!
