My dad and I were planning on fishing lake jennings but last minute decided to head up to cuyamaca. Got to the lake around 7am and started at lone pine. My dad got 2 bites, one he missed and the other he landed. 3 hours pass and no bites so we found a table and made breakfast. After that we went over by the campground over by the dike and I landed one on powerbait. I was hoping to find some crappie or gills but the water was way too cold. Went a couple more hours without a bite so we went back to lone pine and my dad got one more on a night crawler. We ended the day at 4:15pm with 3 nice sized trout (much better size than the wrights rainbow that Poway and jennings are getting). Weather was beautiful. High was 63, 13mph wind, and not a single cloud in the sky. It was nice just enjoying the fresh air.

They're not steelhead. Just regular rainbow trout. The Mt Lassen trout they get are the prettiest trout from any hatchery.

Just so you know, we get Crappie during snowstorms up at Arrowhead when the water temperature is in the low 40s. Small jigs, light line, slow presentation.

Are they usually out in deep water?

nice thing about cuyamaca, there really isn’t deep water. Shore is hit or miss. A sounder is your friend. There is some structure that holds crappie off the jetty by the boat ramp

Yeah I think I heard somewhere that the lake averages 6 feet deep. I wasn't sure if the crappie all stay in the deeper water over by the dam that is harder to reach from shore with a fly/jig.

I’ve caught them randomly in random spots all over the lake. Never targeted crappie up there. Morena was always my crappie spot.

    - Tight to cover, deep in the day and come up at night.

I'll just add onto this report. Fished maca again yesterday and my dad and I ended with 2 trout. Both on nightcrawlers. Bite was very slow. Weather was beautiful in the morning but clouds and wind came in in the afternoon.

Nice tails, usually worn to the bone
