Visited Lake Hodges last weekend before the storm. I slow-trolled a number of areas in my Hobie Revolution chasing some crappie and whatever else might bite. 2-lb. line and an assortment of jig types were used.

Super foggy in the early morning, and I started finding some areas of fish - determining the best lure depth and color pattern. White or yellow/white and about 8 to 11 feet deep.

Nice ones started coming over the rail.

    aGH010223 Hold Crappie 1 Photo.jpg

There was action about every 15 minutes or so …

The fog started clearing, and with enough confidence in the productive pattern, I managed to find roving schools and they somehow kept biting for me. Missed a lot of strikes when not holding BOTH rods AND paying very close attention, and also missed fish every single time I reached for my phone.

I gladly helped a few people out with some advice on what the fish were biting best …. and that is only one piece of the puzzle. White or yellow road-runners and putting on a crappie nibble pellet never hurts.

In true Hodges crappie fashion, they just shut off suddenly and seemed to disappear. I wound in the jigs and called it a day.

The bigger crappie were in the 2.75 lb. range and about 16 inches long, with seven or eight fish over 2.5 lbs. Super thick fish.

I would have to disagree wholeheartedly there TSUGG. In fact, I was at Hodges on the opener Wednesday afternoon from shore, skunked on the crappie. I was at Hodges on my kayak 6 hours on Sunday afternoon, skunked in the wind, whitecaps, and rain for 6 hours and I had three bites - no fish for the day. Not even a bass. I saw a lot of things though, like a guy catch a huge 10+ bass and learned some other things about the crappie bite by just observing the masters.

I've enjoyed crappie fishing for more than 40 years yet, seem to still be learning the basics. You cannot just go and expect to catch a bunch every time - this single day had 7 Personal Best crappie for me.

I'm smart enough to know this will never happen again, and, it probably deserved a post. So, clearly I'm not 'da man' at all. Seriously, AT ALL, but like all of you I'm passionate about fishing.

Thanks to all of you who post and comment on SDfish, thanks for decades of helpful information!

Been trolling mini crankbaits for crappie at Hodges for years.
If I catch one that looks preggers it always goes back.
Bite should be good for next 2 - 3 months.

Here's me at Hodges in May 2003, doing the same thing.

And this is my favorite crappie crankbait:

Everyone has different variations on the theme, but the Acid Rain Charlie Brewer slider was popular that day with the papermouths:
