Got a last minute ticket to play from the wifey, went to SDB, fished 0500 to 1200.

Right away things got started with a legal spottie off some piling on the way to the barge. First time catching anything there.... Then I start scanning the finder around the barge area and find insane marks. I’m thinking a bass orgy is going on so I drop, then quickly get freight trained! After a couple drifts I got two hooked up at the same time — bat rays! They were hitting plastics, gulp, didn’t matter. All mouth hooked! Got two to the boat, kicked my butt! No pics through all the commotion....

After that I couldn’t get bit on bass for a minute... dropping market shrimp got me one solitary blacksmith lol.

Things heated up a bit later, dropping up close to the nets. One particular spot was money, got me, among the calico vermin and other sandies, what is probably my PB sand bass, 21.5” and fat!

I kept two smaller legal sandies (15, 17.5”), then headed for the dropoff along North Island for really good spotty action. Then to top it all off get a 25” hali for more wifey points!

Didn’t keep an accurate count but I’d guesstimate 8 spotties, 8 calicoes and 8 sandies (missed the legal trifecta by a calico), 2 bat rays, blacksmith, and the hali.

What a day - get out there!

PS: much better when tide and wind are similar directions for me!

no competition, sculpin are much much much better. Sandies are ok Battered/breaded/fried or oven baked with Parmesan, etc.

"Last second yak trip didn’t disappoint!"
Some of my recent best fishing trips(freshwater bass fishing) have been a last second trip in my yak. Maybe it is the adrenaline racing through me because I had not planned to fish and suddenly I am on my way and excited
as heck and focused to catch fish. Anyway...I really enjoyed your post and I guess I better return back to the safety of the Freshwater Reports area of SDFish. :)
    Take care and tight lines

No but it was a fatty! The two bass I caught were a male and a female, no doubt they were spawning.... had to scrub the white stuff off the boat, lol!

Agree, I love catching big sandies, and they are pretty decent eating, but sculpin is in a different league. In my opinion one of the best eating fish you can catch in San Diego, inshore or off...
Nice work scisports that's a pretty nice bounty
