I understand you need a PFD on a float tube
    I like the vest idea
    My questions are>>>>
On the lakes, do you need to always be wearing it and does it need to be USCG approved?
    What about for the bay?

    Thanks in advance

Always best to be safe on the water regardless of mode of transportation or where you are fishing. Case in point... a few months ago, an angler drowned when the wind picked up at Otay. He had a PFD in his kayak but he neglected to wear it.

Always was your PFD when in a tube. There isn't enough space and balance to turn around a put it on, should something happen. Especially if you're wearing waders, which can pull you down if they get filled with water.

Does the vest have to be USCG Approved?

Not really. but just like buying a firearm... would you trust it if your life or children's lives depended on it?

Well..kind of! I helped out a guy once in a fast moving stream when his waders filled with water. He wasn't wearing a belt, he fell into the water and the current used his waders as a drift sock, dragging him down the river..pretty scary!

Yeah, a rushing river is a whole different animal. Was white water rafting in Oregon and fell out in some rapids. Felt like I was going to drown with a PFD on. Had to calm down and wait it out.

I was saving for the suspender style but found one of these for 40 bucks at the REI garage sale. I know, you didn't know REI sells ANYthing for <100 bucks but they do. sometimes.

I wear the pouch in the front so it's not jammed between my back and the backrest on the tube. You have to inflate and put the strap over your head.

If you are wearing it, it qualifies as a Type III per according to the manufacturer. Whatever that means.
