Launched late around 6. Finally found good bait today that made the difference. Lots of birds working the surface so I dart in casting a flatfall. 3rd cast, my other rod rigged with a greenback gets smoked. Fun ride and drag peels. Caught around 8. Called it around 11:30 as wind started picking up and causing a chop. Launch and landing was easy. Water still extra warm, 78.

I don’t post much here, but u can follow me on Instagram @sea_saltist for other kayak fishing material.

It was glassy early in the morning. That changed to real choppy by 11 once the wind picked up.

Awesome. Fun day out there for sure. I love it when green backs get smoked. Both ways even...

Congrats, Nice Yellow. It's been really hard to find even bait some days. So those days when there is some bird action, it gives me more incentive to go further in search of bait and hopefully some jumping to cast a flat fall in the area. Can't believe the high water temps (last 4 trips it's been between 78 and 80.1) and lack of large fish close in. Picture of Sonar screen is while going across the Scripps Canyon and the FF looses the bottom at 996 feet, but look at the surface temp.

Yea I hear you. Making bait has been a grind but finally found a nice bait cloud, right at the line. My FF was acting super funny too and loosing track of bottom as well. So you are saying it’s because of the water temp? Thermo-line too thick?? It wasn’t just my FF, my crew had the same issue.

Not sure on the FF not showing that the depth was over 1000, because I've had it display over 1200 in the deeper part of the Canyon. Last Monday I couldn't find any bait straight out or by the pier. I finally saw a ton of bird action to the north, so that's were I went, just north of Blacks Beach canyon and just west of the protected area boundary. As I got close to the thousands of birds, my FF shows a large bait ball that just kept growing and literally filled the screen at 187 feet and started at 9 feet to the point it could not show the total depth. That was the morning I headed that way because I saw before light the bait boat working that are. I quickly loaded up with really big greenbacks from 11-15", I love it when they're large because they swim so strong and tend to like to go deeper without weights. Unfortunately It did not lead to getting any Yellows on that trip.

Nice...I was out two days ago and had 1 run which came unbuttoned. Ended the day with 3 legal Calico. The guy I fished with landed a 15b yellow though...his first trip. We could not find the greenbacks until noon

Hmm I wonder why the FF are freaking out with showing wrong debth. Mine was showing 400-500 while other showing 120 and other showing 20. Maybe it was transducer interference. Bigger bait bigger fish is still pretty accurate haha

So far this summer seems that whoever finds the greenbacks finds the fish. Makes sense

Just a guess.. lack of bottom finding ability could be due to massive amounts of red crab, micro bait/squid etc between the FF and the bottom..

It could be. FF usually does freak out when going over kelp or giant bait balls but it corrects itself and the downscan works during it but yesterday it was just effed for the longest time with downscan not showing bottom also. Hopefully it’s not my unit. will be able to tell next time I’m out.

Ah, I should have gone out. I went back to bed that day after sitting up for a while pondering whether I'd rather fish or sleep, as I sometimes do.

Assuming your mack was flylined toward the top rather than dropper loop?

I actually had a dream this week that I met up with you and a bunch of other people but somehow drove to the wrong place by mistake and then the surf was too high again. I suppose I'm scarred from failed LJ group launches.

Bite was mid column. 50-60 ft or soo. I rather fish then sleep tho. It’s all time on the water
