Went during the incoming tide to fish LJ for a bit at sundown. Thieves were out, salad was terrible, swell was nasty, but managed a couple, including one decent one. Saw a chick in a wedding dress almost get swept off the cliffs during photos and a couple young ladies take a rough bath on the wall when I stopped to take a leak (not one of those 'shower with the coach baths', I tell you), another sun worshipper in strings managed a rude awakening when I first got down there too. All in all, caught a couple and took in the sights, sunset was nice if the conditions weren't. I'll take it, I suppose.

Nice opaleye! it's good that you've managed to get a few despite the terrible conditions.

Do you eat opal eye? You seem to target them a lot.

Sometimes. Ate quite a bit of catfish this week, so won't harvest any unless I hook them poorly. Have to clean and eat them within a day, like any perch or chub species, for best results. Honestly, I fish them when conditions are terrible. Don't really have to cast, as they respond well to chum. Makes targeting them simple in conditions so terrible fishing anything else would be a pain.

Interestingly, I was at LJ last night too!

Weed was not too bad for the first hour, although two other guys 50 feet from me pulled a lot of kelp... After dark it became more weedy and I had to move around to find fishable water. Caught one rock wrasse and one sargo.

Swells were pretty bad and my chain sinkers were too light (I lost all the heavier ones to snags...). Went to HD today to get 4 feet of chains and grabbed an assistant walking by to cut them into small pieces. That guy was super pissed after cutting 5-6 times and still had a long way to go. I bet he wished he was walking down another aisle... Maybe I should figure out how to cut them myself.

Was that a pea picking opaleye?
When I was a kid I used to fish the rocks east of La Jolla Cove all the time
(before it was a marine preserve) and all I took was a box of green peas, & I caught everything on them! even Cabazon! Fun days of my youth!

Keeps this place going. If we post reports, pix, videos, it keeps us all engaged. Probably gets some off the sofa, where you're guaranteed to blank..
