I had some luck in San Diego Bay the opener. Also getting some use out of my wrist rocket and a bag o marbles to deter the seals.

How does that deter them never heard those terms before?

Get away from the bait cage and into the drilled PVC, that'll help with the seal problem.

You can make your own fairly easy and for much cheaper than the ones they sell for like $15 each at West Marine etc. Just go to home depot, buy some short pieces of PVC with caps, drill a bunch of holes, and bingo you are done. Zip tie it into your nets. Seals no more.

The reason they work better is because they are much harder (usually impossible) for the Seals to break into them and/or suck the bait out. The metal cages are easy to crush and break the tops open for the seals, I wish I could find it but there are some videos they show at the lobster seminars of the seals breaking open the metal bait cages. If your bait is soft and waterlogged, they can suck it out without even breaking the cages even. Much harder with PVC tubes with smaller holes that don't bend/collapse when the seals head butt them.

So your baits good, how bout for the lobsters, is there a way to deter the sea lions from eating your catch? I'm just wondering, never been lobster fishing here! Thanks!

Like Cheese whiz said, the PVC is real easy to make. I made some and used carabiners to attach them to the trap. Makes it easier to refill them or clean them out and you don't have to waist ties. I also added a clean out plug to one side of the tube for easier access to the bait/refill. Dang it! all this bug talk now I want to go hunting too...

I remember seeing a video of sea lions eating the bait out of a net, completely ignoring the lobsters and crabs that were in it, so I don't THINK they eat lobsters, I'm no biologist though. In the video the lobsters and crabs showed no fear of the sea lion either, making me believe they don't bother each other. Probably not worth the effort for the sea lions to get at the meat, they are lazy scavengers around here

Awesome job Casey! I just bought some of that gooch juice and am anxious to try it. Any tips to using it? How long of soak time were you using on your nets? I've been experimenting a bit with different soak times and haven't really noticed a trend yet. Also did you have any issues keeping your nets stable with the strong tides lately or did you have to add some weights? Thanks! Anxious to get back out there soon.

Go on the LP Fishing Supply Website, they have it there, it is essentially a spray that you put on bait that is supposed to draw the lobsters in.

Thanks Casey! Hoping to get out after them soon. Haven't seen many reports recently so am curious how people have been doing. The Alicia sport boat has been killing it, not sure where they drop their nets though.
