Headed down south to MB for prebirth fly fishing trip. Got tips from some members and headed into the bay near sunset. Both the wifey and myself landed some Bay Bass. Headed home the next day. A bucket list fish too and on a barbless fly i tied myself. Here are my C&Rs. Thanks again fellas. When you fly fish is it waited or dose the hook stay on the upper part of the water?

There are dumbell eyes tied near the eye of the hook in a manner that makes the fly ride hook up, yes. Similar to the clouser pattern.

Yes, the dumbell eyes are weights, it rides on the bottom or near it.

Find the grass, find the bass.

So how does that fly gear hold up in the sand and salt?

Rod and reel is my salty set up. It holds up fine. The reel is made for salt with a closed drag system. Like anything though, it should be washed with freshwater after the day.

That’s awesome man, always nice seeing fly fishermen smacking bass.
That fly would get destroyed in the surf by the beans I’m sure!!!

    Nice work UCangler!

Many people struggle with getting fish on the fly from shore.

Looks like a Redington Predator rod sporting that Orvis reel. I use a Predator 5wt as one of my primary rods for the bays.

And for MikeCheck1212 : Fly gear holds up fine in the sand and salt as long as you care for it like any gear. Even having a sealed or closed drag system like UCangler's Orvis reel is not necessary if you care for your gear. Many of the finest fly reels available are not sealed or closed (Tibor, Pate, Abel, Alutecnos, Galvan, Wellstone, just the name a few). I have had more issues with spinning and level wind reels than with fly reels, which generally have fewer parts and are easier to flush out.
