Got a couple more species for the tournament, and a couple I already had.. Happy to scratch blacksmith and black croaker off the list, especially since the bass were on the rampage, with the wrasse, opaleye and smelt in the lineup as well.
Also caught a few jacksmelt with ejleh in a pretty fun session where he managed at least one more species as well. Even managed a couple minutes of sunset footage...

Yes more confident. I just believe the light and reflection of the fish screwed up the pic. Before I tool the pic it was a dark fish with whitish stripes.

Look at the dorsal fin/s and arrangement, that seems the easiest method. Jacksmelt only have the one fin, the others all have a second finlet in addition, as near as I know... Wait, is it topsmelt that only have one?

Yeah, it's the location of the first dorsal relative to the anal fin. Problem is the first dorsal is almost always lying flat in photos, so you have to lift it up to be sure.

Still have a whole ten kilo block in the freezer. Got it for about 2 bucks a lb. A bit less, actually

You ever try Mexican scallops for bait? I know it would be a hard decision to use for carnada or to eat...

Want to make an easier decision? Use the ones from the SD river channel, tons of those invasive scallops all down the rocks. Limit is 35 of each species, I think at least three are present. Pretty soft on the hook, but the fish do love em. Deadly chum additive tho

Yeah, but in the jacksmelt, they aren't next to each other, right? Am I crazy?

That pic I posted is a jacksmelt. For topsmelt the two dorsals are closer together, and the back of the first dorsal lines up over the beginning of the anal fin.
