this is what happens late at night, when you're asking yourself "why did I make 10,000 leadheads? Did I think I was gonna make 10,000 ScorcherZ? " Answer: some mini bucktails using the ultra minnow jigs ...so far, all I caught was weeds. next up...using something less gloppy than 2 part epoxy to seal the wraps...but that was all I had on hand.

Huh. I have some of that from a side gig as makeup artist on a RuPaul TV show...dug around and found these.....it's fun when two hobbies come together....I'll give it a shot....

but seriously, years ago I found some random brand that had wayyyy more urethane in it. cut it with acetone and it soaked right into the ugly-*** wraps when i replaced a couple of broken guides on a rod. ...and it dried with a very flexy, very high gloss, better looking than the wraps with clear Tough as Nails. Dunno where that bottle went, If I knew the brand i would try to find more of it. But for now I'm a hard as nails zealot...

I have my wife's collection that she says she doesn't need anymore that she's married with kids. ha!

I mostly use clear coat for thread wraps, red and black for making nylon shrimp eyes. I don't use any of the other colors, not sure what I would use them for. Any suggestions are welcome.

Use 'em to paint jigheads..or mini bucktail heads. The Hard As Nails line has a lot of colors...and is one of the least expensive. Painting and mixing different colors of different brands is dodgy..they sometimes don't harden right and make a sticky mess. And don't use nail polish on heads that are used inside tube baits...nail polish and plastisol don't get along and it turns the plastisol gray or white.

I agree with Vito. Yes you can buy nail polish for cheap at the 99cent store, but the best part about their polish isn't their prices, but the colors available. I've bought brown, olive, orange, white and metallic colors there. Hideous colors that you can't imagine someone ever wearing, but are perfect for lures.

Those are great looking jigs CK.. Would be perfect with a small curly tail grub as a trailer. ( Or an Uncle Josh pork Rhine cut in half and pinned on ).

upload_2020-12-4_10-39-9.png So mine was no out of pocket costs...saved $6.29. Haven't caught a fish yet, though....
Made 5 hair jigs. $30 saved!!!!
spent some of it on a fly tying vise and a thread bobbin, so my next hair jigs will have better paint jobs and neater wraps. No doubt it was the sloppy workmanship that kept the fish from eating the jig...problem solved. And I am still $4 in the black!

Will have to be Otter Tails or similar these days , too bad the pork belly prices put Old Uncle Josh out of business . Last year I did try to make some trailers made from cut Chamois soaked in the Berkley sandworm juice , seemed to work , just have to figure out some leather stain / dye for color . Tight lines . Not scented, I have buckets of small grubs in different colors, and some fluttercraft 4 inch worms, clear/glitter..as well as a similar size/color made by yamamoto. Will the little spotties just tear the tail off? Probably....
Or add a thin slice of the various gulp baits that I have splashing around...for flavor, not optics.

Proof of concept. Looked much better in the water before dink mcdinkerton's pick and roll tied all the hairs in knots. Unraveled and got one more before getting rocked....

That's my favorite for coating the wraps on rod guide repairs too. Sally will treat you well.
