    That's a 4#er easily. What a catch!

I know right? It's a shame it was caught on a long rod surf setup. Imagine the fun on some freshwater bass gear.

Thats a toad for sure. I've reached out to the angler to try to get some additional info.

The spotted bay bass record trail is so muddied. The world record is 4.92 pounds, the state record is 6.75 pounds and there was reportedly a 7 pounder caught a few years back.

I was guessing the one in the link was 5lb+

How is the world record 4.92 lbs and the state record is 6.75 lbs? Not being a smart-***, just not sure if it's different governing bodies or whatnot.

And yes, that thing is a beast!

I've heard about the first two records, never heard about a 7# spotty being caught though. Would love to see that photo.

Yes, definitely two different bodies. California DFW keeps track of state records, IGFA keeps track of the world records, and has a submission/approval process that must be followed.

Lots of people don't even bother with the IGFA.

There have been half a dozen fish I've seen photos of that were larger than the 4.92 pound world record. Some of those guys have said they thought the world record was larger, so they didn't consider submitting their catch to the IGFA. The IGFA makes you pay or subscribe to see the records, so if you look up the state record and its 6.75, you'd probably think you were safe to assume the world record would be at least that.

Yeah, IFGA is a joke. Rarely is the largest fish ever caught the actually the World Record, not many people like the back patting yacht boys.

I can get a pic of the record spottie. It was caught by a friend of mine on a spinnerbait. Hard to believe, but after seeing the certificate and pic I couldn't doubt him any more.

This one? This is Weintraub's 4.92 or 4.96 whatever it went down officially as, side-by-side with the one caught recently by Dorris. Tom Buckalew patched these photos together for a side-by-side comparison.

Hard to tell which is bigger but the one on the right looks like it will take the record if the guy went for it.

Thanks for the photos! Both are amazing fish! The one on the right appears to be a male, and its very large for a male. Prior to that pic the largest male I have seen was about 17". I bet its momma is a 6# slug.

World class trophy. Was it caught on an artificial bait?
