Launched at Dana around 6:30, made bait right in the bay which was nice. mix of smaller mackerel and decent sardine. Made tracks to LJ to look for yellows. Water was as dirty as Ive seen all year. Slow trolled a bit and blindly through surface irons in areas ive heard the have been caught for nada. Around 10 we headed to a rock cod hole thats been producing for me. Picked off a hand full for tacos and left some for next time. One was a lunker. All reds, big starrys, and barber poles. Headed back in to try our luck again with the jacks. Still no sign. Busted out the swimbait rods and manged one decent one along with a pig that pulled hard enough to grab the gaff thinking it may have been a seabass at first. measured just over 22'' Let the checkers swim off and headed for the barn around 4. Water was 61-62 and brown/green. Probably red tide.

Very nice, how big would you say that bass is, 5 to 6 lbs I'm guessing?
I caught a 6lb around 25 years ago and I was daydreaming what my bass looked like, it must have looked like yours, hard to remember. So unless things change it be might my PB for a while now.

FATTY!!!!!!! Nice job. Those reds are my favorite for table fare.

If it was a red tide (which it IS that time of the year), then you need to push out beyond its boundaries to be successful. Not as important for rockfish because the algae stays on the surface. Red tides can equate to tough conditions. They usually come and go within 3-4 weeks time. They make for an awesome scene at night when the waves break though. Especially if you get a large swell.

. In my past experience, it's usually not the quality of the water, but the consistency of it. If it's red tide for a few weeks, the fish will be used to it and eat, but as soon as it changes to a gin clear, it can shut off again. Fishing is fishing though and you can't always predict it. That's why I'm so addicted to it. I read a guy got one the same day in the kayak fishing 60'.... so you never know
