Still fishing the kelp with Tomáso weekly for the most part. Fishing always great. Catching still up or down.

Also still no bonito or mackerel though seeing many more pencil barracuda. Got a number of strike from these but no hookups.

Biggest from today out of 17 or 18 total between us over 4.5 hours. - 3.5lbs on the Boga Grip. Mostly shorts with maybe 3 legal keeper size.

Way to get it done on the fly! Yellow and orange work well for the kelp bass?

Yellow and orange is my favorite color combo. It works pretty well for me. Do the fish have a preference? I dunno.

I have also had pretty good success with chartreuse/white, yellow/white, rusty brown or cinnamon, purple/white, all white, all pink, pink/white, all black, black/grizzly, olive/white, blue/white, purple/white, black/purple, black/chartreuse, red, red/white

Some of the most violent grabs I have got from calicos have been on pink/white flies

Tomáso and I both tie our own flies for calicos. All are tied with snag guards. Good guards really help keep from losing flies to the kelp.

    Cool, Craig

The best day I ever had out there(with flies) was with a big, meaty, nondescript, fuzzy tan fly you made. They swam 10’ to gobble it. I had so much fun that day.

Was this from that day? (I wasn't there but you sent me this image)

And this was from the first day I ever fished with you, which was the first day you ever fly fished at least 15 years ago (with some loaner gear I brought along - and before my hair turned gray). I got several other nice ones that day and some small. And you got a few smaller ones and lost a couple of larger ones (according to my log notes) - not to bad for first day ever with fly gear. You bought your own stuff not long after.

I miss being a boater, but 23 years is enough.

Great report! What is your go to tying material for calico clousers. And do you incorporate flash?

Yes flash. Cheeks and flash tail. Flash tail usually extend about an inch to inch and a half behind the end of other materials.

To get larger flies I Clouser (Kreh) Half & Half style with the saddle hackle tail.

I have switched to using Flymen Faux Bucktail which is much more durable than bucktail.
