Fished the local lagoon on a draining tide this past week and the Halibut have been on the chew. Bite has been best the last two hours of the tide change which tag this spot usually happens about 1.5hrs after the predicted time. First day had 4 short Halibut with the best one around 20”. Went back around the same time the next for redemption. Started with a big white game changer for nada. Switched to a ghost shrimp pattern and second cast hooked what I thought was a nice halibut. Couple minute fight and some super hard runs and I had about a 4lb Mullet in my net. Second one on the fly for me. Super fun fighters. Switched back to a smaller white game changer and walked until I found a deeper hole where I couldn’t see bottom. Was almost like fishing a deep run for trout. I was casting up current and stripping my fly through the top of the deep hole when I felt something take a hard whack at the fly. It was only about 2ft deep there so I thought it may have been bottom until it happened 2 more times in the same spot. On the fourth try I finally got it to stick up comes a nice halibut shaking his head. Couple short runs and I slid him up on the sand. 24” and my first legal halibut on the fly. Picked up a 12” spotty and a few more short bites before calling it a day at slack tide

That's quite a feat in one season, let alone one session. Well done!

Cool! I had 2 bites(that i could see) from a school of mullet on a tiny fly once in SD bay. I hooked 1 briefly, but it popped right off. Still haven't caught one yet.

I was helping a little girl fish a long time ago in SD bay, and she caught a mullet on a tiny rapala minnow. All the way in its mouth.

Congratulations! Landed my first legal halibut on the fly a couple weeks ago. What a blast. Waiting for that mullet strike...lord knows I see plenty of them jumping while my fly is in the water.

    Nice work man

Cool post and pics. A 4lb. Mullet ! That must have been a drag burner. They look like a strong fish.
