Short: six species in less than 24 hours, mostly dinky, with a few catfish, a redear hybrid (?), and a couple small bait carp the cooler..

Fished the IV from the afternoon Friday through Saturday morning sometime. It was a grind, struggle was real to put 8 in the cooler out of maybe 40 at most total between Ucsdsu , the little girl and myself, some gut hooked dinks in the mix. We were all set to lay at least somewhat of a beat down, but halfway into the ramp up, my back decided I had had enough and I went down the next couple hours. Before I did, the highlights..
Fish a Salton Sea ditch west of Mogambo 's for a couple bait carp, with my buddy breaking off a decent one in the drain (7 lb maybe?). I ended up with a surprise redear or bluegill hybrid, a Tilapia, a carp, and a little channel to start my day. Move to the reservoir , fish jumping and splashing in a promising way..I ran into a couple old buddies.. and the breeze dies.. damn.. fishing pretty much went from promising to dead, in the matter of minutes. I ended up with a decent cat after sundown, the first real keeper for the run. Bad omen... So after some chaos, the little one, young gun and I head east to track down a bite.. about totally dead until almost 11:30, when we start getting bit by decent fish and making a connection or three, mostly in the drains. He dumps a biggun, I break off a 20-30# flathead in a tube, then bust off another channel maybe 7-8 lb.. right about then.. my back has had enough. Cutting some bait bent over, I feel cramping that brings me to my knees. No longer able to stand, I am confined to the car for the next few hours, barely able to stand up and go to the bathroom... Fun fun. This was probably the real chance we had to make good on getting a few nice cats , but I wasn't able to cooperate to do my share...got a couple more by morning, but I felt bad my buddy and I missed the bite that could have turned this run from mediocre to amazing... Ended the run at OLF for a few mini striper and a couple of spots where we did alright, size was running small, but, it was a fun exit, with Ucsdsu bagging one decent one with camera on even. Look forward to fishing with you man.. lmk if you have pix to add

Good seeing you yesterday. So sorry about your back.....I understand. Sucks getting old....

Why have I been up since 3:30am? You guessed it, my back....Ouch. Back was spasming, I downed 1200mg Ibuprofen......

This is why I can’t go offshore fishing 2 days in a row! No more weekend back to back trips.....I have to pick one day and rest the other......

I hope your back get better enough to slay some tuna offshore.....Then we can moan and groan the next day together.......

You’re still awesome in my book Werfless !

That’s what’s so neat about getting old.....you get to see what works every morning when you get up. The other day I was moving trailers of sprinkler pipe to another field all day long. Must have strained some muscles hooking up the trailers. Last night I had to sleep sitting up.

    Werfless,
I'm fired up to get back to the valley this fall and winter wonderland.
Lots of fishing and hunting adventures ahead. It's cool to throw rods and shotgun in the jeep and not know where you'll end up.
I'm looking forward to the restaurant in brawley with the rib eyes mogambo had posted a while back.
Nice post, glad your getting out there.

    Appreciate that, Vito1023 ..

tsugg I am just a guy who believes in bait, lol..

Mogambo , what is it with the weather there this year. Damn chilly the night before last, fish were biting well though, I have to admit.

geofish , always nice to hang out. Thank you again as always for all the fish and bait, appreciate it

The IV is one of the most unique fishing spots around. Thanks Werfless for showing me around and teaching me your ways. Glad we got to go on another adventure! Always a good time.

Being under the stars at 3:30am, flipping bait into drainage ditches, and snagging catfish... Now that's some IV bliss.

You don't have to be old to have back problems. Mine was worse in my 30's. Good news is healing can happen. That is the way the body is designed!

Werfless , I saw that one pic and thought you had found the fountain of youth! Then I realized, nah, he ain't showing his face!

Cool read! Sorry about the back pain, I too have chronic issues with my back. Just this past Saturday, I pretty much stopped fishing around 11 am and let me buddy take over the front of the boat due to a sore back.

Glad you were able to use the jerkbaits, and better yet, you caught some fish with them!

Was a good time, Winstondry .. instead of a few meager fish to two lb, we really should have had a few 3s with a 4 or two tossed in...

no one wants to have a back attack, that sucks, sorry. Are there any legal camping areas out
there, where a person could spend a couple days cruising the channels? That sounds like a blast.

Pretty much anywhere you won't get in the way. Make sure if you settle in someplace tucked in where irrigation guys and farmers can get trucks and equipment past you if needed. Don't litter or be an A hole and you will be left alone if you're fishing. They seem to want the tourist dollars bad out there, check my sticky at the top of the catfish section if you want my take on fishing the IV
