    Rod: Okuma Rockaway

    Reel: Penn battle II 2500

    Bait: Sand crab

This fish gave me an interesting fight. I felt the bite, set the hook, and started reeling, but I didn't feel anything at first, so I stopped reeling to see if a fish was even on the line. I felt a couple of light shakes so I started to reel again. I then start to feel some weight, but still no fight to the fish. It doesn't feel like a ray, so I'm assuming it's just a decent sized croaker. That all changed once the fish got about 10 yards from me and then all hell broke loose. It must have taken it that long to realize it was hooked, because it was like a switch was flipped and the fish suddenly woke up. At this point my rod takes a hard bend and my drag starts to scream. It's obvious I have something good, so I slowly walk up and down the beach keeping the fish in front of me while it wears itself out pulling drag. I eventually landed what ended up being a 32" corvina.

That red spot you see on its face is a splatter of my own blood. The consequence of lipping a corvina.

I'm wearing my corvina thumb proudly.

Holy.... I don't think I could imagine catching any fish that size, specially something like that out of the surf. Great fish! I also do not envy you your thumb for the next couple days.

I use the same method of stomping on my fish once I catch them, dispatches them humanely and tenderizes the meat. I can’t wait to get out there

Your tip for the day: Don’t lip corvina! I used to fish the dikes around the south end of the Salton Sea for corvina. One of my fishing buddies, who had MS and had to fish from a wheel chair, told me he had invited his nephew down from East LA to fish for corvina. I was fishing the dike when they showed up. After the nephew got his uncle loaded in his wheel chair I rigged their tackle, baited up and cast out for both of them. It wasn’t too long before the nephew hooked a hefty corvina. (About 12 pounds) and was able to finally bring it to the base of the dike. He scrambled down the rip rap and tried to lip the corvina which promptly latched on to his hand. The young man ended up with some pretty nasty cuts and punctures when he tore his hand out of the corvina’s mouth. He was jumping around, cussing, and holding his hand, while blood squirted in all directions. His uncle thought it was the funniest thing he had ever seen. I’ll never forget what he told his nephew, “”Ain’t no fun when da bunny’s got da gun.”

I looked it up....the world record was set in June, 2008. 10# 6oz caught with a grunion. So your fish is certainly up there with the best.

Holy shi*it! Wtf! On sand crab wtf! What lb line? What’s your previous best? I would consider that a once in a lifetime catch right there. I’m sure you weren’t targeting it though. Niiice catch!

I was definitely not targeting corvina. It wasn't even on my radar. I usually fish 6lb line in the surf, for the allegedly line shy beans, but today I was targeting spotfin, so I bumped it up to 15lbs. I'm lucky I did, because I'm not too confident I would have landed that fish on 6lbs. I've now caught a barracuda and a corvina in my last two surf sessions on sand crabs. It seems everything likes sand crabs.

I rarely fish the bays, so this was my first corvina. I guess it's all down hill from here. Lol.

Just to give you an idea of how big this fish was... If I were to stretch my arm all the way out to my side this fish would have spanned from the tip of my fingers to almost the center of my chest, and I'm 6'1. I definitely lucked out today.

    Thanks everyone for kind words.
