I mainly use plastics in mb but I've been bringing my lady with me lately and I was thinking about having her taking care of a bait rigged rod to keep her busy. I don't know much about it but I have a heavy rod with specs for 1-4oz so I was thinking of throwing a c-rigged smelt with a 1oz torpedo sinker. Would that work for anything in mb? I don't know much about bait fishing except for catfish so I'm wondering if anyone could tell me if I'm on the right track. Any bait related help in mb is much appreciated.

Off the rocks, around hospitality, Quivira, or the jetty. Size 4 or 6 mosquito hook on a spider hitch/dropperloop with a 1oz weight at the bottom. That’s what I personally use and never get skunked. Get an UglyStik intercostal or gx2, they’re hella cheap. I like using 10-20 mh rated rods for this. Shrrriiimp all the way man
Tbh, the rod you’re using might be too heavy.

Oh and if you set her up with this, she’ll probably be outfishing you lol. MB has been tough for me lately while using plastics. But no joke, shrimp has been producing a consistent bite for me, sometimes cast after cast. A good amount of the time they’re on the smaller side, but I do catch some bigger models pretty often. So you might end up switching over to the dark side for a while

Thanks for the info and I don't think she would mind outfishing me haha. I was hoping to grab on to something bigger than just the regular catches (spotties, kelpies, sculpin). The only other rod I have in that size you recommended is a casting rod. I have a smaller 6ft medium spinning set up that I use for fresh water and the heavy set up that I've never actually caught anything with lol. Any advice on how to use that heavy rod?

Funny, but agree, geofish ... Look, heavy gear has a place in MB, but what you're going to get with big baits are rays and sharks, typically... Be ready for huge pelagic and diamond rays , both of which can end a human life... Fresh bait is king.. knocker rig on 100# mono leader....

MSTRB8R... there’s your custom license plate, if someone could sneak it by DMV without them figuring it out.

I have 40# braid on my that reel. Would a 1oz knocker with a circle hook work or do you recommend something more open like an octopus or bait holder hook? Also I got my bait last time at the 99 ranch fish counter. Would you count that as fresh? Sorry for the bombardment of questions

I prefer Zion market for my bait.. fresh bait? Catch it. Fresh bait beats frozen bait every time. Type of hook and size are up to you, I like 3/0 or so when fishing for rays, in the bigger channel areas, you may need a few oz of weight to keep you on bottom
