Need help, looking to do some bay fishing in SD bay and mission bay, looking for easiest accessible areas of bay, wanna find some spots and how to get there. I wanna take my 16 and 8 yr old out, but need some spots to check out before taking the 8 yr old. What are best plastic baits and set ups? Thanks in advance

In my opinion, I would go for San Diego bay if you want more fish. One of the best spots over there is the right side of harbor island. Pretty much the simplest bait you could use would be a three inch swimbait. Put that on a 1/4 ounce jighead. I use 8 pound flourocarbon leader( though you should probably use 10 lb ), and it is connected to 12 pound mono. Personally, I really don’t have the kind of money to buy a proper setup, so I just use an old uglystik spinning combo. Another simple rig is the Rodney Marquez drop shot rig. If you want more info on that, go check out his youtube channel. Good Luck!

Shoreline of harbor island can be pretty sketchy for an 8yr old, in my opinion.

I’d go fiesta island in mission bay or ski beach in mission bay. Gulp drop shot or shrimp bits on small hooks for the kids, 3”swim baits or cool baits under spins if you’re comfortable with retrieves at tight depths above eel grass. Ignore tides and just fish when you can fish, but probably better bites on a negative to incoming.

Taking the kid out? I know this isn't what you want to hear, but get a shrimp pump and hit it at low tide. Mini knocker or c rig, size six or four, and let the kids pump shrimp and catch fish all day. Mariners has a playground for the 8 y/o and enough young life around for the 16.. Santa Clara, ski beach, crown point, and even mission point have playgrounds and bathrooms on the water or damn close so you can take a break when you need to, for you or them. Most areas mentioned have BBQ facilities also.. Gl

I agree with coach. May be a bit of a pain in the a*s to get ghost shrimp, but you’ll get a ton of action. If you can’t get a pump, seaforth sells them frozen and live.

any of the coves on the west side of mission bay have sandy shores, also fiesta island.

dropper loop with a circle hook 12-14" above a 3/4 or 1oz torpedo weight to be able to cast it far. hold the rod up and reel in slow, dragging the weight back through the sand and grass. torpedo weights cut through the grass better or at least dont get hung up as often than other shaped weights. circle hooks will help the youngin if he doesnt know when to set the hook on a bite. i prefer dropper loops when using circles since feeling for the bite isnt as important, and lets the lure look a little more natural in the current. nose hooked or threaded sandworms, 2, 3 and 4" grubs, 3" swimbaits all work with this rig.

this also works off the piers in sd bay

Liberty station is nice, they have a playground for kids, and tons of fields for activities, picnics, etc. Easy access to the water. Spotties, halis, bonefish, corbina, rays. I don't see many vagrants. Plenty of parking too.

Rent the red skiffs at Seaforth boat rentals! Even more fun, you can let the 16 year old drive the boat and help the 8 year old out fish him :)
Those red boats (and the ones prior to when they got the red ones) is what got me addicted to always owning some type of boat for my entire adult life.

I read your post lately on the sticky and it helped point me in the right direction. Yesterday, I caught 7 spotties in about 2 hours using a swimbait. There is some nuance to catching, but once you get that muscle memory down, things start to get easier.

The way you describe how to use a swimbait is what I've found to be 100% spot on.

I would check out liberty station. Best bait for the money is a zman sented curley tail in new penny. 1/4oz t-riged or on a swimbait head. Just a drop of gel super glue to help hold the bait on
