Anyone else plan on getting the new penn baitcasters? I'm going to try the 200 and 300 sizes. Saw the price for the squall 200 is around $180. Pretty good price and is going to be competing against the tranx 200 and okuma Komodo 200.

Isn't the main difference between the current Squall and Fathom conventional reels is that one is plastic, and the other is metal? I have to think that would be the same case with the new baitcasters as well, otherwise what would be the difference? If that holds true then you have to compare the Fathom to the Tranx and Komodo, not the Squall.

I like Penn, and I hope these reels meet the hype they are sure to garner, but as I said in the other thread, Penn doesn't have a proven track record with Baitcasters. I'm definitely curious, but I'm going to wait and read the reviews from people who have fished them, and fished them hard.

Supposedly the squall is supposed to come with an aluminum frame. Idk yet what the difference between the models will be. People seem to love the old international baitcasters and they still go for a decent price. But Penn definitely doesn't have the track record with baitcasters that other companies have. If these prices are true, I'll have to test one out.

I believe Pure Fishing owns Penn , they have the experience with the Abu Garcia line , if you study the pics on line the Penn look remarkably like the Revo line ,right down to the lock for the handle nut on the Fathom model anyway . Made in the same factory ? Guess we will have to wait for more info and reviews . WR

I have a 200 Fathom pre-ordered from Tackle Warehouse but it's not supposed to ship until late November. I got it for $212 during their Labor Day sale :D

I've heard from people that they were very impressed with the squall, I haven't used it yet, but I've heard good things about it

I'll be watching how things go with these baitcasters. For me a baitcaster needs to work "good enough"(freespool, drag, line capacity etc) but the foremost criteria is how they hold up over time....in saltwater. Pretty much due to being retired and living on MB a day seldom goes by that I don't wet a line. Every day my reels are exposed to salt water. I rinse religiously and do my own maintenance. Most of the low profile reels don't hold up well to day in and day out use in saltwater....too much work to keep them going. I hope these reels hold up better than existing ones.

I know you like Calcutta's. What other baitcasters have you found held up to daily saltwater use?

A cheap option would be the abu garcia black max. I love mine, and have had it for a little over 4 years, and it's still casting really good

Thanks for the tip. I own a few of the older E series Curados, and they have help up well for me. I'm not looking to buy a new baitcaster, as I mostly just fish spinning gear in the surf. I was really just asking out of curiosity.

I'm still waiting on Penn to reply about a busted frame that I emailed about. Hope they can release these baitcasters and keep up with the customer service support. I emailed Daiwa the same day as penn about a stripped frame screw on a reel. They got back to me within 48 hours.

I haven't found any low profile reels that have worked out for every day use. Curado K is the worst. I've burned through 3 13fishing reels in about the last 3 years, even the ones "made" for saltwater use. For me the Calcutta's pretty much run everyday with little more than a rinse off with fresh water after every use

X2 on the Calcutta’s.. I bought a brand new Calcutta 400 at the Fred Hall show in 96-97 and that is one of the reels that goes on every boat trip, and countless shore trips throughout the years. It’s a bullet proof work horse for that line category ( 15-17 or 20 pound mono ). Still smooth as silk, casts great and flawless drag.. 33 plus years of use and still going strong..

I had to replace the ARB ( anti reverse bearing ) a few years ago, but it’s a cheap easy fix..

$250 is a lot of money for 200 size baitcaster.
