Yeah, if you have been paying attention to my exploits at all this spring, then you have already guessed that it is a redear. I posted on here a few weeks ago that one of my goals for this year was to get a 3lb redear. Nothing to it, right? Just keep going to San Vicente every Monday until one bites. Well, he finally bit today. It was mostly, an unremarkable day right up until it wasn't. I had high hopes with the cloud cover and calm water, but it was looking like another day without the brass ring. It was time for me to leave when I decided to try a weed bed that gave me a couple last week. I switched to the rod that I had rigged with a slip bobber, so I could drift the bait right over the top. I was about 7 feet deep in 10 feet of water. The line fed all the way to the stop and the bobber stood up. Then a couple of seconds later it lay flat. That usually means that a fish has come up and taken it from below. I expected it to take off as the fish swam back down, but it just lay there. I went ahead and set the hook, and it was fish on. He ran some drag off the reel and pulled me through the weeds. He was using my P-Line as a weed whacker, but I finally got him the open water and to the net.

He was 14" long with a girth of almost 15". Weight was 3lbs 2ozs.

Beautiful fish! I was out there on Sunday but could only manage bass. Still looking for my first one of the year. They are so much fun. Congratulations! Keep 'em coming!

Bass were a nuisance for me again today too. As for as the panfish, it was a majority redear again this week, but I did get some nice bluegill too. From the looks of this guy's fins, he has been doing some nest work.

Beutiful fish and great job. It takes a little talent to catch slabs like that consistently.

Thanks. Yes, I would think I would be pretty recognizable as the ancient mariner in the white hat. Give me a shout next time. I always enjoy your posts.

Yes. Next time I catch him, he will probably be a new lake record. The current lake record is 3.7lbs, so you know there are a lot of potential record breakers out there.

Funny thing though was that as it came time for me to start thinking about leaving, I realized that I had only put two in the live well to take home. I needed another to make the three I usually keep, so I decided to fish a little longer. I'm glad I did, but I still wound up just keeping two. Oh well, there's always next Monday.

Congrats on the PB Larry!! You certainly put in the time and effort for it to pay off for you. Thanks for sharing...you'll probably beat the lake record soon!

    Sweet gill
I caught one like that at San V once slow trolling a jointed minnow bait for trout.
Made the paper when fish reports were in the local sports column once or twice a week.
