Have not heard much on the other piers. I have been to OB twice and got my first ever legal lobster. Easy dozen shorts each time that went back in the ocean for next year. I see lots of boater nets out by the jetty.

Just curious how any of the other piers are doing.

Made lobster rolls using hawaiian sweet rolls and butter.

What time are you going, or should I ask what is the best time. Spent all morning at OB and nothing but a sea lion causing havoc.

Sea lions are bad news. They are great at stealing bait.

Most folks show up at dark and fish till late at night. I have been coming early at 4 PM to have my first pull by 5 PM. My legal was caught at 6:30 so early. I leave between 8 and 10 and I see folks showing up. On opening day as I walked by, there was a guy that dropped his net earlier in the day and said he had 1 legal and a lot of shorts that wet back in.

Went to IB pier on Saturday cause of Oktoberfest at OB. I was figuring that I would not find good parking.

IB had me with 3 shorts and a couple were very small. The guy next to me got a legal but everyone else around did not get any keepers. I moved and the net was attacked by a seal taking my exposed salmon head. It was slow so I left early for more sleep.

Lots of macs were being caught. I stopped after getting 8 for my net.

Went to OB on Tuesday. Dropped nets early at 4:30 PM but nothing on pulls until 7:30 PM. Had 1 keeper and 8-9 shorts. A fisherman came to look on one pull and said I had a keeper but after measuring it outside the net I could see that it was short by 1/4". Fisherman said to keep it but I let him know that there was maybe a fine of $150 per short and tossed it. That made me wonder how many shorts are being kept.

One violation of Fish and Game § 2001 or § 2002 carries with it a maximum punishment of six months in county jail and a fine of up to $1,000, plus penalties and assessments which can boost the total fine to $4,500. Our office has never seen maximum punishment imposed. We find that an unrepresented defendant, with no prior record, usually is offered a plea bargain involving three years of summary probation, plus a $250 fine with penalties and assessments (total of about $1,100, which can be converted to community service), a $250 contribution to the Los Angeles Conservation Corps and a stay-away order from the area where the offense allegedly took place.

I saw a lot of people throwing back the shorts. Not saying it doesn't happen but it looks like there are a lot more decent folks out there than we tend to give credit too...

Thanks for the correct fine. I will start telling folks this. I do see most people are responsible and toss them back in. I suspect boaters take in the most so the game wardens must be there. Last year I was told there was one at IB but have yet to see one. Maybe they are stealth.

I see lots of people keeping shorts. One group had a grocery bag filled to the top with shorts. They made no effort to hide it also. CalTip is terrible at responding to calls. Why even bother? DFW is rarely on the piers. They should be on piers a bunch, especially with lobster season going on.

Are they judged by a jury of their piers?

The wardens are few and far between. But like with any enforcement agency, the more calls they get about a certain spot, the more they'll focus there.
