I got up this morning for an early Oside pier run...nothing happening yet. And when I say nothing, I mean nothing. Like the bucket brigade wasn't even there :emoji_confused:?

One guy on the north corner at the end was pulling in dink macks but that was it.

    Hope the bonito show soon.

On a skiff trip last week we did some trolling outside of La Jolla and picked up a couple in the 5 lb class . There was a small school boiling in one spot but didn't stay up long enough to get on them hard . Enough to have a bowl of poke and 5 pints in the canner . I was surprised at the size though , has been a long time since I have seen ones of that quality . Thanks for the report . WR

I've been looking around a little at the south end of Mission Bay the last few days but don't see anything that looks like bonito yet.......

I attempted to reply before... I'll try again.
Only in late summer...loves me some bonito salad sammiches.
I also like to mix it up with the bucket brigade. I got out there with a little acid wrapped rod and a Tranx 300 (w/ after market power handle) and start jigging like a fool. The bucket brigade look at me like I'm a side show attraction. I just smile and hand them all my mackerel by-catch. Doesn't take long for one of them to move one of their rods to the side so I can get on the rail.

Thanks for the report Mike. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for your posts. Your first bonito post is about the same as the green flag dropping at the track :emoji_thumbsup:.

Heck yeah, a couple of 5lbers sounds like a bunch of fun. The little 2lbers off the pier always put a smile on my face... feisty fish!!

It's still a little early. last year I don't think the bonito bite got hot until about the middle of the month.

They should show up at all the piers (or wherever there is bait). Jenx is correcting timing...pictures in my phone of bonito from last year were Sept-15 to Oct-16. But, I know guys were catching them a week or so before I went.

Thanks for the info. I've seen a few posts of random catches, but I think it will be a few more weeks before they really come in hard. Water on the beach is pretty freaking cold right now for this time of year. Some are being caught here and there, but I think a few days of halfday boats nailing them will signify the bonito bio mass at shore. There's a big difference between grinding everyday a week for one vs limiting in an hour
