    Date Hunted 11/16/2019:

    No ducks in SE Louisiana.

Very few ducks in the sky again. We have had cold weather and we have the food, no ducks. We had two chances today at ducks. Eight teal came in and we shot five. About 10 Dosgris passed over the back of and we did not have a good shot so we were hoping they would come back but didn't. That is it.

Highlight of the day was the 150 coot (pouledeau) pack that slowly came to us behind the blind. The were bunched up tight and we put nine shots into them. Ground rake. Picked up a bunch and shot some more to get the pouledeau limit of 45. Get the crock pot ready for the stews.

Coot stew?:emoji_thinking: I never knew that they were considered edible. I always thought that the only thing they were good for was burying upside down in a flower pot with only their feet and legs sticking out, sort of like a coot house plant. Well, ya learn something new every day.

I read an article not to long ago that said coots taste just fine . It made me determined to get my hunting License this year. As those birds love to kick the crap out of my water every 10yards instead of just flying away. I cant wait to grill em up on the river bank.

From personal experience they taste better than most of the divers and Shovelers but I do have limited coot culinary taste testing . It would be a fun shoot though . WR

You know things are tough when all you got to shoot is Poule D'eau, mais yea. Seriously though if they haven't been eating small fishy creatures (stink like a bait box) Poule D'eau (Cajun French for water chicken or coots) make a great gumbo. Put them in a pot with a roux or sauce piquante with the usual onions, potats, seasoning, etc, simmer, put over rice and C'est Bon. Grandma always had a pot of gumbo on the stove with rice and me and my cousins would bring in coots, ducks, doves and even some times robins and she would whip up a big pot of gumbo. The recent cold front should have pushed the "green heads" and pintails down with teal season long gone

Coots have the largest gizzard in proportion to body size of any known bird. There’s nothing better than gizzard stew a neighbor used to make. Unfortunately she passed away without divulging the recipe.
