The fun ones are definitely in that area...good luck! The water will probably be a little high for working a light rig in the sand flats. A heavier rig at the backside of the trough should do the trick. Plenty of sand crabs out there for bait.

Yea good call thats what happened. We found the trough, but we had to get the cast over the first set of breakers, and once we did the waves kept pulling the line back with each breaking set.

I was back out again 10:30-12:15. A couple corbina were back up in the flats. I went after them with sand crabs pinned to a light rig. No takers. One of these days I'll find one that is hungry and dumb enough to take the bait.

If you are thinking about getting in an afternoon session, beware...now that the sun popped out the beach crowd appeared like a swarm of locust.

They were out in force yesterday evening, I'm sure word has got out and things are even worse now. I think we had less than 100yds of fishable water because all the beach goers.

I had a buddy in the Marines who ate like an absolute glutton, sitting across the table from him if the chow hall was serving something he liked was a bad idea. He would shove as much food as possible in his mouth, chew with his mouth open, and just keep shoveling. I finally asked him what was up one day as I watched like 1-1/2 pieces of cake get packed into his suck. His response has always stuck with me..."If something tastes good, the more I put in my mouth the more I can taste it.".

Pinning more than one crab on the hook is a tribute to my old friend.

I also caught some fish this past week by tipping a Gulp! with a couple crabs. I figured it was the same approach as tipping an artificial with squid when fishing for rock fish.

Signing up for Varney's newsletter is smart. You should also get a copy of his light line revolution book. I suspect there will be plenty of copies available at Bill's upcoming surf fishing clinic (22-June in San Marcos).

There are 4-5 YouTubers that focus on surf fishing. Most of them are well north of us (SF Bay up to Oregon) but the techniques they use are universal. Die Hard Fishing, Fisherman's life, and More than Fishing are all based out of SF Bay area. This guy is based in Oregon. Surf Fishing Central is a guy that fishes up in LA, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Orange county. All of their videos are decent and once you start watching them your YouTube recommendations will pull in videos from all over.

Monitoring and participating with this forum is probably your second best resource. Your best resource is time on the beach with a line in the water. You will quickly learn what does and doesn't work. I'm typically surf fishing a couple times every week, Friday-Sunday, and would be happy to meet up if you are interested.

Thank you for all the info! Right now I am up at Riverside for school but my finals are this week so I will be back in SD for the summer. I would definitely like to meet up sometime this summer to fish together, I do not know how my schedule will look like for work and other obligations but I will let you know as soon as I can so we can plan a day.

I couldn't stay away...those beans up in the wash are too much. Fished from 13:00-14:30, low was at 10:20 this morning, high at 17:20. Water is still in decent shape. There was some heavy salad congregated in the strongest rips but clear water in between. I decided to change up my rig and tied on #6 Mutu Light circle hook baited with 3-4 sand crabs. I'm liking the new hook choice.

Caught 3 BSP and 4 corbina. Best fish below was caught at 14:22.

Alright! That's enough! I'm headed down there right now! If I catch a 16 inch bean, he's going in the skillet!

The 16s and bigger should be there. Saw 2 swimming together right when I got in the water. Today was the first time this year I've seen multiple big fish together. Good Luck :emoji_fingers_crossed::emoji_fingers_crossed:

K-Bo sights more fish in one session than I see in a season. I’m obviously doing something wrong.

Must have been an osprey in a past lfe.
I need to pound the sand with you soon, my friend.

just wrapped down there. Couple of fun size crows. One big hit who left me a calling card. Pretty good sized scale! Maybe Werfless can id the perpetrator.

Good deal - glad you hooked up. Maybe the scale is from the hog I saw on Friday?

I watched a seal eating a pretty fat croaker of some sort a few weeks off Carlsbad, right in the surf line. Seal was thrashing it back and forth, before eating it. You’re probably right, that scale may have come from a doomed croaker...
