does anyone have any good surf fishing location recommendations in north county?
Im tired of getting skunked @ oside pier; and I live in escondido, so driving to lajolla, ect is a bit far for my tastes.
Ideally I'd like to catch larger things, bat rays, sharks, ect, but perch/ bean areas are appreciated too

Me thinks you’re gonna have to travel a tad.

I know i'll have to drive at least to the coast, which is ~ half an hour I'm just hoping to minimize my north/south driving, since la jolla is like an hour drive

78 to Carlsbad or Oceanside, away from the pier - or take a ride on the Chubasco

The big structure in North county has absolute loads of sharks some times of year, from say north Del Mar to trestles .. do some exploring and be aware of the MLPA boundaries...

    Try around lagoon/river openings.
Friend caught a 4 foot butterfly ray in Hedionda about a week ago.
Surf is mostly smaller IME, but a lot tastier.

That long jetty on the Pendleton side is probably loaded with big calicos and sculpin...

If you're asking for a map with where to go and what to use I don't think you're going to get that. Spend some time exploring, and learning, and go from there. People here will help you with the basics but the rest is up to you.

I looked it up, and technically the long jetty is open to the public, @ no cost. even if you're civilian, if you land there on a kayak or swim there, its allowed

Get some number six hooks and some shrimp from the Asian market, the cheapest stuff they sell, head on, uncooked, whole shrimp. Tie the number six on a drop shot style rig, using a NAIL out of a fire pit, pallet, or phone pole as a weight about ten inches or so below the hook (attach with a square knot or two). I don't know how, but nails don't get snagged in rocks and kelp very easily. Just cut a small piece of shrimp, just enough to cover the bend of the hook. A short cast, let it settle to the bottom, let it sit for a minute, bounce it back up to you and move a bit farther down the jetty and repeat.. that's what I would do.. and then enjoy the hell out of the sculpin, bass, opaleye, sargo and halfmoon tacos... Probably an outside chance of rockfish, sheep, etc..
