Fished from ~7 to noon. Water was murky and surf was high

    Caught approximately 15-20 fish
handful of short calicoes biggest 12"
    smelt
    blacksmith
    a bunch of Kelpfish? (pic)

Gotta say the meat hunt hasn't been going well. I fish saltwater for the first time in a year or so and land a nice halfmoon that was delicious. Now 5 sessions later and nothing worth taking home since. First hit is free i guess.

Still surprised i haven't caught any opaleye yet, used to catch them regularly when i fished sunset cliffs. Thought maybe the problem was i was fishing at night, so i went during the day and still no panfish of any kind for that matter. Probably gonna stick to night from now on.

Also are kelpfish any good to eat? Any min size?

No minimum size, and yes, they are edible. Black croaker come out at night on the jetties.. think small hooks and chunk bait for those...

kelpfish taste pretty decent; very mild flaky meat. Just gotta go for the slightly bigger ones as filleting is tough on the smaller specimens. They have no scales, but you should remove the skin or at least scrub it with salt to take the slime off else it will be slimy when cooked.
