Got a late start this morning, fished from 10-1. Was targeting bonito again, this time made it out till damn near the end. Threw a hydro minnow for a bit, then tried out a new 1.5 megabait. Super stoked that it didn’t snap my long salmon/steelhead rod, that thing really covers some water! Only caught a few mackerels, they were big enough to almost swallow the big stock treble. Swell was calm. Anybody looking to fish mission beach, they had the tractors push all the kelp up against the rocks so the surf should be clean at least for tonight, don’t know about tomorrow though because they didn’t bury it in the sand which is what I thought they usually do.
I have a question concerning the bonito run. I’ve only fished for a little over a year so I’ve only got one under my belt. Was last years hot bite out of the norm? Are there some years they don’t show? I guess I’m looking for a lil history lesson cuz I don’t have enough personal experience lol. Thanks in advance -jack

On your question concerning the bonito run cycle it revolves around the mighty anchovy.

The bonito come each year. The real question is how many, for how long and what size? Some years there are loads of the things and they are pretty big, some years just a few are roaming around, some it seems they are here for a couple months, some just a few days.. not real sure what all the variables are, bait, water temperature, wave height and color of the water all play roles for sure though

Good to know! I remember last year I came upon them by accident. I’ve never fished the jetty before that, but there was too much salad in the surf and my new(and first) lucky craft 110 was getting hung up for hours. Finally gave in and hit the jetty, figured the water would be cleaner there and I’d have a chance at a halibut which was the goal of the day. Boy was I in for a surprise lol. “I remember thinking, this is what jetty fishing is like!? Why am I not doing this all year!?” And mostly, “why aren’t there more people on the jetty goin in on this!?” Granted, it was around noon on a weekday. But yeah, Thank you for filling me in on last years greatness, cuz it did seem to good to be true haha

This year bonies are spotty at best, here one day gone the next, last year was more consitence due to the anchovies school hanging around the pier, this year the anchovies are no show.

And speaking of anchovies, today I snagged a baitfish out there. Can’t find much info online about what it might be. It was anchovy size, maybe skinnier. But with a blue/green top with a few black spots near it’s head. Any ideas?

Last year me and a group of bonies hunter could tell you the exact time bonies would show up, but this year not so much.

Was out at MB N Jetty yesterday from 5pm-sunset. Was all the way at the end. All I got was this nice skunkset on the way back. That said, I had good a good time chucking sticks. Damn, its treacherous hopping rocks in the dark.

I’ll be hitting the jetty possibly Friday morning and Sunday morning for bonies if you’d like to join me. I aswell have been only catching big macks off the jetty.

Yeah I usually go to this specific rock that’s perfect for casting at water level about halfway to the shack, but that hasn’t been producing so I said screw it. I fell hard once last year and vowed never again lol. Picked up some xtra tuff boots from big 5 for $20 and those have helped

I assume you go early. If I can wake up I’m down. I work nights during the week, so sometimes it’s hard to get back on a normal sleep schedule on my days off smh

You’re right! Idk why I said xtra tuff smh lol. Yeah I love em. They’re my go to for pretty much all my fishing, except summer time in the surf. They’re especially clutch while hooping at the pier, last year I spent too many late nights with cold wet feet. Actually I owe you a thanks! I got them from your recommendation on an old thread in my lurker days haha
