Nope, took a break from Crowley! I gave Lake Mary a shot. The shops in town and the guides told me the fish were deep and not worth going after with a fly rod! They were right...and then very wrong! I got on the water at 8:00, tooo cold before then! I threw some streamers shallow for awhile, then moved deep since everybody told me that's where the fish are!I went the next 4 hours without a fish, wanted to bail....but i don't do skunks! I had already done 2 laps around the lake and ended up at a spot that's always been kind to me. It's a 5' deep flat, with a ledge on the outside that drops to 8'. It's not where everyone said the fish would be..but I've got history with this spot from a past fall trip! My first cast..a 12" rainbow, skunk buster!!! I really thought that would be lt. Working parallel to the ledge, a few casts later, my fly gets hammered. The fish takes off sideways tailwalking like a marlin! Fish landed, 20" rainbow, healthy and feisty! Five minutes later, bam, same scenario..fish takes to the air, running me down to my backing! A 22" beauty! I kept working my way along the ledge, picking up 6 fish between 19"-22", and losing 2 that I couldn't stop! These fish are from the Desert Springs Oregon hatchery, not the normal mushy DF+G fish. The town of Mammoth has a committee that collects monies from various shops and donors to bring the better fish in to attract tourists to the lakes! You can't really rely on the State hatcheries! A day that was in the dumpster..turned out to be really sweet! To quote Ike, Never give up! 20211004_114124.jpg 20211004_151341.jpg 20211004_142130.jpg 20211004_141939.jpg 20211004_113129.jpg skunk buster..a normal size rainbow..

It is great to see you having fun and catching so many of these beauties. Looks like the time of your life mixing it up and catching lots of nice fish. I just hope when you get back I still will see you at some of the lakes fishing for bass. It will be weird talking to fisheromen in a month or so and asking have you seen or heard from mcfish. When he answers that mcfish can be found each weekend on the shoreline at Poway with all the other trout fishermen...all I can say is..."I am glad he is happy and I wonder if he wants to get rid of all of his roboworms?" ha ha. :)
    Just kidding mcfish.....thanks for sharing.

Ike who? The mention of hatcheries kinda ruins it for me. I prefer to think of those fish as being spawned out in high mountain streams. Beautiful fish, nonetheless!

I have no idea why non stocked, non native fish have any size or possession limit... Probably has a lot to do with money, or something...

He is probably buying 3lb test line for the trout leaders he will be using at lake Poway soon. He will be the guy on the shoreline with a blue hat with a trout embroidered on it. His t-shirt will have a catchy slogan like...
“When I’m out and about... I fish for Trout”

All those brookies, rainbows, and browns in those California high mountain streams..not native! Maybe wild, but not native! I believe only Goldens are native to California's high mountain streams. I think the only other native trout we have is a type of cutthroat. California has very few native anything's! At least your largemouth bass are native..NOT!

A Crowley Cutthroat from today. I believe these are descendants from the native Lahontan Cutthroats. Yes, they are being raised in a hatchery, but once put in Crowley, they grow like crazy..just like the rainbows and browns! 20211005_112750.jpg
