Thanks admin for adding me to the forum! I'n new to San Diego and for the most part saltwater fishing. Went to OB pier last weekend for some lobster. Caught 6 but they were all 3":emoji_disappointed:. Funny story, my first check on the hoop net had one little guy in it. The hobo on the pier smoking a joint insisted I give him the lobster and that possession is nine-tenths of the law. I denied him the little guy because I was the only person in that area with a net. Thanks to the guys on the south point fishing for sharks for running that guy off.:emoji_ok_hand: Had fun but would like to start catching legal fish. I don't have a boat so do you all have any other pier or shore fishing recommendations? Thanks guys! Attached is one of the little bugs I got

Thing about OB Pier is that it’s so lengthy, there are a ton of location opportunities.

Try out Harbor Island, on the Lighthouse end...

Lighthouse end of Harbor, dropshotting a sandworm. If there are any fish there at all, it'll get bit. Other than that, if soaking bait is your game, N. or S. Jetty, on a strong tide swing.

Good ol OB pier . I stopped going there for many reasons. One being seeing crap that pissed me off . Like leftover lobster carapace from clearly illegal sized bugs. People gaffing up sharks and rays, only to leave them or not even intend on eating them.

Erick what kind of legal fish are you trying to catch? Fishing from shore for legals is a grind. Gotta bounce around and learn what different areas hold at certain times. Mission bay holds fish and you can hit lots of shoreline.
For lobster keep reading reports and pick up as much information as possible. Most people won't give up spots and techniques to just anyone.

Now I feel silly for asking that question. I'm used to freshwater fishing, using artificial bait at that. Thanks for the insight

I hit OB pier last year late starting In February. Had surprisingly some successful outings.

What are you using for bait? How long you soaking your bait (leaving hoop nets down with bait)? Where on the pier are you dropping?

The couple times I've had a chance to go I hit the south end, used fresh caught Mack. Soaked for about thirty minutes .got some smalls and chummed the water nice for the shark guys.

Try the pier between the restaurant and the right turn. Then take the turn and go no more than 20 feet......That corner has been hot for me......

I’m October we dropped hoops in that corner from boat (farther than pier folks could drop) and scored ......

Are you chopping up Macks or just throwing them in whole? If using whole, score/slice them up a bit.......I have success even using my frozen (not fresh) Macks....

This year however, I’m using Skippies and Bonies 85% of the time....

Thanks for the tip. I want to try shelter island sometime too. If not for lobster, at least some plain old fishing.

Might wanna try the Shelter Island Boat Ramp before they post “No Fishing “ signs on it. It opened Dec 21. Some good reports from there. I don’t think it’s been heavily pressured By Hoop Nets yet. May be worth a try....

    Please post reports...
