My son Levi and his buddy Zac planned a fishing trip together to the OB tidepools. It was so great to get out and have the boys hang out in the fresh air. They kindly let their dads come along for the trip. =)

Great conditions and tide was -0.5 ft. We had one trout-size rod, two mini rods and a poke pole. Shrimp or mussel/shrimp combo was the bait of the day. In addition to the usual wooly sculpin, we caught a largemouth blenny, and our first kelpfish (what a cool looking creature!) Highlight for us was getting a good fight on the line, thinking it was a rockfish or something else big, but it was a healthy lobster with a lot of kick.

All catches hung out in our tidepool aquarium for further inspection until the boys released them a little later.

They all found their own holes. The lobster didn't harass any of the fish and the wooly sculpin went head first into a vertical hole.

Awesome trip with Zac and his dad... looking forward to our next trip!

Such a cool area. One of the things I love about OB. There's plenty of solid fishing to be found between the pier and sunset cliffs proper as well

Thanks for the info! We've never tried between OB and Sunset Cliffs because driving by I didn't see a good way down (or at least not one with kids). Is there an access point you recommend? Or is it must walking south from OB or north from Sunset Cliffs during low tide?

For real..beach life lol. Those spots were alot easier to hit when it was a 5 minute walk from the pad.

No problem man. Hope you and the kid have a good time exploring some new areas. I started to type up a long comment on here, but that is an area engrained in my heart and one off the beaten path for many San Diego anglers. Didnt want to put it all out there for the lurkers lol. Always happy to share (what little) I know with active members of the community here. First time I met Werfless was on one of those beaches.

That one fat bass I caught on camera came from that area... Nice fish and nice spot, but finicky place at most tides

Agree. I caught a few smaller but close over there. One rainy winter night a few years ago tagged my 3 biggest bass from shore in a half hour. Never forget that session lol. Some other less common species and above average quality fish. Unfishable at times with salad levels, definitely finicky on the tides. Feast or famine.
