My attempt at a keeper sculpin in the ballast point area was thwarted by heavy fog, and my desire not to die in the bay. Speedboat yahoos didn't seem to notice the fog. But I assure you, it was really foggy.

I don't often keep halibut, but I decided since plan a was dumped, that would be Plan B if the fates aligned. Mouth closed, I was an eighth of an inch short. And off he went. Caught on a Mac tail, he was real mean, best Hali fight I can remember of any size I've caught.

Too bad about the 1/8". 22" on the nose when you catch it is gonna be a short fish by the time the warden checks it!

Right, and a tape measure in my yak isn't exactly a flat surface ;) it sure felt like I wasn't going to even have to measure... womp womp.

Yeah, off LJK yesterday we caught a 14" Calico on the nose. We let it go to not test it with Mr Warden due to shrinkage

Try using a little nail polish on the side of the yak you land fish. 14", 22", whatever lengths you need. You can keep the fish in the water right next to you on a gripper if you like and be sure if it is legal or not even close.

Is that a thing? I always carry my Halibut stretcher. I keep it hanging in my garage right next to my lumber stretcher. I tend to make bad cuts.

    Nice Hali net!

That's why whenever you catch a barely-legal fish, you gotta break the spine in a few different spots and start pulling:emoji_wink:

An alternative to putting marks on your kayak could be either putting a dot on your rod or doing a few wraps to mark various measurements. On my main bay rod, I've got a line wrapped on at the 14" and 22" mark from the butt of the rod.

You were on the yak in spirit... everything I got today was caught on the spider rig (not the 8 rod one) as explained by Werfless

Haha, yes, as nets go, it's really good, I think it was a labeling mistake at Dick's but it was only $5

The reason I said it is a nice Hali net is because of the fine, knotless mesh. It does not split the tails of the Halibut. Killer deal!

I can hear the conversation now: What Mr. Game Warden, sir? It's a little short? Here, let me step on it and see if that makes any difference. ;)
